Chapter 7 - EVAN CARTER KNEW WHO KILLED ELENA

I reached the estate in nineteen minutes.

A drive that normally took thirty-two.

The guards at the gate were down.

Alive.

Drugged.

Professional.

Inside, the office door remained locked.

I approached.

“Allie.”

Silence.

“Murphy?”

Her voice.

Good.

“It’s me.”

The door opened.

Lily ran toward me.

I lifted her before thinking.

She wrapped both arms around my neck.

“Allie?”

“Fine.”

Then I saw him.

Evan Carter stood near the window.

Thin.

Scarred.

Very alive.

Allie remained six feet from him.

She had not hugged her husband.

That told me everything.

“Explain.”

Evan looked at Lily.

“My daughter?”

Allie’s voice sharpened.

“You don’t get to say it like that.”

Fair.

Evan accepted it.

“I disappeared because they threatened you.”

“Who?”

“Dominic.”

“Salvatore?”

“No.”

I watched him.

“Who does Dominic work for?”

Evan looked at me.

“That’s the problem.”

“He works for you.”

I almost laughed.

“Try again.”

“He has for years.”

Allie frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Evan reached into his coat.

I raised my weapon.

He slowly produced a phone.

“Your sister recorded this.”

Audio played.

Elena’s voice.

Then Dominic.

You don’t understand, Elena. Murphy cannot take over.

Why?

Because he’ll dismantle everything your father built.

Good.

You think he’s strong enough?

Stronger than you.

Then another voice entered.

My own.

I went cold.

It sounded exactly like me.

Give the order.

Elena gasped in the recording.

The audio ended.

Allie stared.

“You?”

“No.”

Evan nodded.

“I know.”

Voice cloning.

Three years ago.

Crude compared with now, but possible with enough recordings.

“They used your voice to authorize killings, transfers, everything.”

Like Patrick had done in another man's world? No, stay fiction.

“Who?”

Evan looked toward Lily.

“I never learned the top name.”

“What did Elena learn?”

“She believed the person wanted you isolated.”

My stomach tightened.

“Why?”

“Because grief made you easier to control.”

That hit.

After Elena died, I became colder.

Stopped auditing details.

Trusted Dominic.

Trusted Salvatore.

Built a locked office and stopped sleeping in my bedroom.

Exactly what someone needed.

Then Evan handed me a flash drive.

“Elena gave me this the night she died.”

“Why keep it three years?”

“I was hunted.”

“You had a wife and child who thought you were dead.”

His face broke.

“I know.”

Allie looked away.

No forgiveness.

Not tonight.

I opened the drive.

Financial records.

Voice samples.

Security schedules.

Then a folder named MURPHY.

Inside were psychological notes.

My routines.

My triggers.

My grief.

Someone had studied me like a weapon.

Final document:

PHASE THREE — SUCCESSION.

Objective: Murphy unstable, unmarried, no heir.

I looked at Lily asleep against my shoulder.

No heir.

Then another line:

Upon Salvatore’s death, emergency authority transfers to Dominic pending blood-family review.

Evan whispered:

“They didn’t kill Elena only because she found the money.”

“Why?”

“She discovered they were planning to remove you next.”

May you like

And according to the date on the final file, that plan was scheduled for Friday.

Three days away.
