Chapter 8 - VANESSA'S SIGNATURE

Vanessa stared at the page like it had bitten her.

“That isn’t what I signed.”

Matteo laughed once.

“Of course not.”

She grabbed the document.

Her hand shook.

“I signed wedding trust paperwork.”

Father Bellini lowered his head.

“Your grandfather’s attorneys included the transfer page.”

She turned on him.

“You knew?”

The priest did not answer.

That was enough.

For the first time, I saw Vanessa not as the woman who had tried to ruin Marco, but as another piece being moved on a board older than her.

Then I remembered:

She had still moved pieces too.

Both could be true.

Luca asked:

“Were you planning to claim my restaurants after the wedding?”

“No.”

“Were you trying to remove Marco?”

“Yes.”

At least truth.

“Why?”

“Because my family told me he controlled the old records.”

Marco stared.

“I control inventory, staffing, and menus. Not your family secrets.”

“I know that now.”

“Now?”

Her shame finally appeared.

“They told me if Marco stayed, he would make sure you never trusted me.”

Luca’s face remained unreadable.

“And you believed them.”

“I wanted to.”

That was the first honest thing she had said all night.

Then Matteo said:

“Your family needed Marco gone because he still has the original vendor lists from the first three restaurants.”

Marco looked confused.

“I have invoices.”

“Not just invoices.”

Matteo turned to Luca.

“Your father hid proof inside operating archives. Marco kept everything.”

Marco blinked.

“I keep everything because chefs lie about shrimp prices.”

For the first time all night, I almost laughed.

The vendor lists, combined with my mother’s files and Matteo’s ledger, created a full financial map.

Enough to expose the Bellini scheme.

Enough to challenge the forged ownership claims.

Enough to force restitution.

But Luca had to decide how much truth he wanted.

Not privately.

Publicly.

The room waited.

Then Luca took out his phone.

Called his attorney.

“File an emergency injunction against Bellini Private Events, C.B. Holdings, and every related entity on the restaurant group.”

A pause.

“Yes. Tonight.”

Another pause.

“No settlement language.”

He looked at me.

“Full disclosure.”

My chest tightened.

He continued:

“And contact federal counsel. We may have a labor-extortion and racketeering case tied to restaurant vendors.”

Father Bellini sat down like his knees had failed.

Vanessa covered her face.

Matteo watched Luca with something like approval.

Then the front window shattered.

Glass exploded inward.

A bullet struck the wall behind Luca’s head.

May you like

Everyone dropped.

The Bellinis had stopped negotiating.
