Chapter 11 - THE TRADE CARLO WANTED

Trade the maid.

Not the ledger.

Not Matteo.

Not Luca.

Me.

I watched the video three times.

Luca refused to let me watch it a fourth.

“Why me?” I asked.

Matteo answered first.

“Because you connect everything.”

He was right.

My mother’s files.

My father’s attack.

Marco’s promise.

The Italian conversation.

The dinner schedule.

I was not powerful.

I was inconvenient.

Carlo Bellini understood inconvenience.

He had built a career eliminating it.

Luca said:

“No trade.”

Vanessa’s voice from the video echoed anyway.

She had framed Marco.

She had tried to intimidate me.

She had signed papers she didn’t read and believed lies because they benefited her.

Still, she did not deserve to be tied to a chair by her grandfather.

I said:

“We involve police.”

Luca nodded immediately.

The old men in the room looked startled.

Even Matteo.

Good.

Federal agents arranged a controlled response.

No unauthorized rescue.

No private vengeance.

Carlo demanded I arrive at the banquet hall with the Reed drive.

Instead, agents sent a decoy vehicle.

I remained in a surveillance van with a federal officer, Luca, and my own lawyer.

Yes.

My own lawyer.

Luca offered.

I refused his.

The LEO—no, that’s another story.

The Reed family finally had representation.

The operation almost worked.

Agents entered.

Vanessa found alive.

Carlo gone.

A tunnel beneath the banquet hall led to an old delivery garage.

He escaped.

But he left the original settlement books behind.

Why?

Because the books were bait.

Inside were pages proving bribery, coercion, fraud—and one page none of us expected.

Luca’s mother.

Isabella Moretti.

She had been receiving payments from Bellini companies for years.

Luca’s face turned to stone.

“My mother died ten years ago.”

Payments continued until her death.

Marco looked stricken.

“She knew?”

Matteo said:

“She knew more than Father.”

Apparently Isabella Moretti had not been the quiet wife history remembered.

She managed parts of the Bellini relationship.

She helped create the false ownership amendment.

Why?

Then Vanessa, bruised but alive, gave us the answer.

“My grandfather said Isabella owed him because of the child.”

Luca frowned.

“What child?”

Matteo went very still.

“Don’t.”

Luca looked at him.

“What child?”

Matteo closed his eyes.

Then:

“Me.”

Silence.

May you like

Matteo was not Carlo Moretti’s son.

He was Carlo Bellini’s.
