Chapter 12 - The Reunion That Changed Everything

Adeline recognized her father's hands before she recognized his face.
They were older.
Thinner.
But the small scar across his right thumb was unmistakable.
She remembered that scar.
He'd gotten it repairing her bicycle when she was eight.
Now those hands rested on a table inside a secure federal facility.
The man sitting behind them looked up.
"Addie?"
Her knees nearly gave way.
"Dad?"
Samuel Caruso stood.
For one terrible, wonderful moment, they simply stared at each other.
Then Adeline ran into his arms.
She didn't care who watched.
Didn't care that she'd spent three years trying to be strong.
She held her father and cried.
"Daddy."
Samuel's arms tightened around her.
"My little girl."
She pressed her face against his chest.
"You're alive."
He began crying too.
"I'm here."
She pulled back.
Then hit his shoulder lightly.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
His expression broke.
"I'm so sorry."
"Three years!"
"I know."
"I buried you!"
Samuel closed his eyes.
"I know, sweetheart."
Adeline began sobbing again.
He explained that after exposing Sterling's financial crimes, he'd been threatened inside prison.
Federal investigators moved him under an emergency protective arrangement while they pursued evidence against a network of corrupt officials and contractors.
His apparent death had been part of a covert operation, but the secrecy had caused his family extraordinary suffering.
"I wanted to contact you every day," Samuel whispered.
"Then why didn't you?"
"Because Sterling's people were still watching you."
Adeline stepped backward.
Her heart ached.
"I needed you."
Samuel nodded.
"I know."
His voice broke.
"And I'm sorry I wasn't there."
For a long moment, they stood in silence.
Then Adeline reached for him again.
She wasn't ready to forgive everything.
But she wasn't going to waste another second pretending she didn't love him.
Later, Samuel met Emmett.
The moment he recognized him, his expression changed.
"Maria's little boy."
Emmett swallowed.
"Mr. Caruso."
Samuel looked at the old watch on his wrist.
"You kept it."
Emmett nodded.
"Every day."
Samuel's eyes filled.
"Your mother would've been proud of you."
Emmett looked down.
For a moment, he was four years old again.
Then Samuel placed a hand on his shoulder.
"You saved my daughter."
Emmett shook his head.
"She found the evidence herself. I only helped make sure someone listened."
Samuel smiled faintly.
"That sounds like something Maria would've said."
The reunion continued for hours.
Adeline told her father about Ruthanne.
About the nursing home.
About the debt.
About the years she'd spent secretly investigating Sterling.
Samuel listened with tears in his eyes.
Then he reached into his pocket.
"I have something for you."
He handed her a small envelope.
Inside was a photograph of Adeline at her high-school graduation.
On the back, Samuel had written:
My daughter, the bravest person I know.
Adeline cried again.
Then Samuel's expression became serious.
"There's something you need to understand."
"What?"
"Sterling didn't keep you employed simply to watch you."
Her stomach tightened.
"Then why?"
Samuel looked toward Emmett.
"Because he knew you were the only person who could legally claim the original Caruso family trust."
Adeline stared.
"What trust?"
Samuel swallowed.
May you like
"The trust your grandfather established before Sterling stole the company."
And according to Samuel, the trust still held a controlling interest in the building Emmett had just purchased.
