Chapter 11 - The Father I Buried Without Seeing

Adeline had buried an empty coffin.
She didn't know that until the photograph appeared on her phone.
For three years, she'd believed her father died in the prison infirmary from a sudden cardiac event.
The prison had released his personal belongings.
A watch.
His glasses.
A worn leather wallet.
But his body had never been available for a family viewing.
Officials had cited medical and procedural complications.
Adeline had been too devastated to question them.
Now she stared at a photograph of Samuel Caruso standing beside a black sedan on the night of his reported death.
"Emmett," she whispered.
He looked at the screen.
His expression changed.
"Where did this come from?"
"Unknown number."
He examined the image carefully.
"That could be your father."
Adeline's hands trembled.
"It is him."
Emmett looked at her.
"We need to verify when it was taken."
She nodded.
But tears were already streaming down her face.
"What if he's alive?"
Neither spoke.
Then she asked the question that frightened her most.
"What if I spent three years mourning someone who was waiting for me?"
Gio contacted the investigators overseeing the financial conspiracy case.
They began reviewing Samuel's prison medical records, death documentation, and transport logs.
Within hours, several irregularities emerged.
The attending physician had resigned shortly after Samuel's reported death.
The transport paperwork contained conflicting timestamps.
And the company responsible for handling the remains had closed six months later.
Then an investigator found a sealed federal record.
Samuel Caruso had provided information in a separate criminal investigation shortly before his reported death.
Adeline nearly collapsed.
"He was working with federal agents?"
The investigator nodded.
"According to the documents we can access, yes."
"Then where is he?"
"We're trying to determine what happened afterward."
Emmett remained beside her.
He didn't take over the conversation.
He let her ask every question.
Eventually, an investigator explained that the photograph appeared consistent with an authorized transfer from the prison.
But the available records didn't establish Samuel's current location.
Adeline's hope battled with fear.
Then the investigator received a call.
His expression changed.
"Excuse me."
He stepped into the hallway.
Five minutes later, he returned.
He looked directly at Adeline.
"Miss Vance, there's someone who would like to speak with you."
Her heart stopped.
"Who?"
The investigator hesitated.
"A man claiming to be Samuel Caruso."
Adeline gripped the chair.
"Where?"
"He's been under a protected identity while cooperating in a federal investigation."
The room seemed to tilt.
Then the investigator added:
"He says he can prove Sterling Dunore ordered the factory fire."
Adeline covered her mouth.
But the final revelation was even more extraordinary.
May you like
Samuel had been alive the entire time.
And he'd spent three years secretly collecting the evidence needed to clear his name and bring Sterling to justice.
