Chapter 13 - THE FATHER WHO LEFT A SHADOW

Luca had spent his entire adult life trying to escape his father's shadow.

Antonio Moretti had built the family empire through intimidation, hidden deals, and an absolute refusal to accept weakness.

He demanded loyalty.

He punished mistakes.

And he taught Luca that the only way to survive was to control everything.

Now investigators were examining allegations that Antonio had participated in the financial scheme behind the Whitmore trusts.

Luca didn't want to believe it.

But he had learned something from Emma.

Truth didn't become less important because it hurt.

He authorized independent counsel to cooperate with the investigation.

Financial records were opened.

Old contracts were reviewed.

Former employees were interviewed.

And slowly, the history of the Bennett companies emerged.

Twenty years earlier, Antonio Moretti and Martin Bell had entered several legitimate investments together.

Over time, Martin began using shell companies to conceal unauthorized transfers.

Antonio appeared to have signed some documents without proper scrutiny.

But the recovered evidence also showed that Antonio later discovered irregularities and tried to recover the money.

Luca studied the records.

"Why didn't he report Martin?"

Rebecca looked grim.

"Because doing so would expose his own illegal financial operations."

Luca closed his eyes.

His father had chosen silence.

Not because he believed Martin was innocent.

Because protecting the Moretti empire mattered more to him than protecting the people who had been robbed.

Emma listened quietly.

Then asked, "Did he know about my mother?"

Rebecca nodded.

"She contacted his office several times."

Emma's eyes filled.

"And he ignored her?"

The room went silent.

Luca looked at her.

"Yes."

He didn't defend his father.

Didn't make excuses.

Didn't pretend the truth was complicated enough to erase the harm.

Emma studied him.

For a moment, she looked surprised.

Then she nodded.

"Thank you for telling me."

Luca swallowed.

"You deserved the truth years ago."

That evening, Luca returned to the estate.

He walked through the west sitting room.

The chair where Emma had been tied was gone.

The room had been cleaned.

The damaged furniture replaced.

But Luca could still hear Bianca's voice.

Say it again.

He could still see Emma's wrists.

The fear she'd refused to show.

The silence of employees who had been too frightened to intervene.

For years, Luca believed power meant never allowing anyone to challenge him.

Now he understood that a household built on fear could become dangerous even when he wasn't present.

He called Samuel Whitmore.

"Samuel, I want every employee to have direct access to an independent complaint system."

Samuel nodded.

"Yes, sir."

"And I want outside oversight of workplace safety."

"Of course."

Luca looked toward the empty chair.

"No one working in this house should ever be afraid to report abuse."

Samuel lowered his head.

"Understood."

Later that night, Luca received a letter.

It had been recovered from Antonio Moretti's private files.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

Luca,

If you ever discover what Martin Bell has done, understand that I made a terrible mistake.

I believed protecting the family business justified remaining silent.

I was wrong.

Luca closed his eyes.

Then he read the final paragraph.

There is one person who can repair what I destroyed.

Her name is Emma Carter.

Luca stared at the page.

His father had known Emma's family.

May you like

He had known her name.

And yet Luca had never heard of her until she became his maid.
