Chapter 12 - THE WOMAN WHO WAS SUPPOSED TO DISAPPEAR

Emma Carter had never imagined that simply cleaning a library could put her life in danger.
Now she learned that Martin Bell had considered her a threat long before she found Bianca's recording.
Luca met her at her attorney's office the following morning.
He didn't ask her to return to the estate.
He didn't offer expensive gifts.
He brought information.
"Emma, Adrian remembered something important."
She looked up.
"What?"
"Bianca told him Martin intended to silence you."
Emma's face went pale.
"Silence me?"
Luca nodded.
"Before the theft accusation."
She gripped the edge of the table.
"Why?"
Rebecca opened a folder.
"Because you were approaching the age when a separate portion of your family trust would become available."
Emma frowned.
"I'm thirty-two."
"Your mother's trust contained a provision requiring an independent review when Noah turned eighteen."
Emma looked toward her younger brother.
"Next year."
Rebecca nodded.
"Exactly."
The review would expose years of unauthorized transfers.
Martin needed the trusteeship altered before that happened.
And he needed Emma discredited.
The accusation of stealing Luca's confidential memorandum was supposed to create a criminal record or at least a damaging public scandal.
Bianca's treatment of Emma had been part of a plan to force a false confession.
But Emma refused.
And Luca came home early.
The entire conspiracy collapsed because one woman refused to confess to something she hadn't done.
Emma looked down.
"I thought I was going to die in that room."
Luca's chest tightened.
"I'm sorry."
She met his eyes.
"You didn't know."
"I should've known my employees weren't safe."
She shook her head.
"You can't see everything."
"No."
He paused.
"But I can build a home where people are allowed to speak when something is wrong."
Emma studied him.
For the first time, she saw a man trying to change rather than simply defend his reputation.
Rebecca continued explaining the case.
Investigators had recovered financial records linking Martin to years of trust mismanagement.
Bianca and Sophia faced charges related to assault, unlawful restraint, and conspiracy.
Daniel had agreed to testify.
Adrian's medical records were being independently reviewed.
And Martin Bell had been located.
But then Rebecca's phone rang.
She answered.
Her expression changed.
"What?"
Emma's stomach tightened.
Rebecca listened for several seconds.
Then looked toward Luca.
"Martin Bell has been arrested."
Luca exhaled.
"Good."
Rebecca hesitated.
"There's something else."
"What?"
"He requested a meeting with prosecutors."
"Why?"
"He claims he has evidence of a larger financial conspiracy."
Luca frowned.
"Connected to whom?"
Rebecca looked uncomfortable.
"Your father."
Luca went completely still.
His father, Antonio Moretti, had died eight years earlier.
He had been a ruthless businessman.
A man who believed loyalty mattered more than law.
But Luca had never believed he'd participated in stealing children's inheritance.
"What does Martin claim?"
Rebecca took a breath.
"He says Antonio helped create the original shell companies."
Emma stared at Luca.

Then Rebecca added something even worse.
"Martin claims the Bennett acquisition was supposed to complete a plan your father began twenty years ago."
