Chapter 9 - THE MAN I TRUSTED STOLE THE CHARITY

Jonathan Price had worked beside me for seven years.
He brought me coffee during audits.
Sent flowers when I miscarried two years earlier.
Knew every donor restriction.
Every password protocol.
Every internal weakness.
And while everyone watched Dante’s affair destroy our marriage, Jonathan stole thirty-eight million dollars from sick children, shelters, scholarships, and families who trusted my name.
The betrayal felt different.
Colder.
I could not blame love.
Only trust.
Federal authorities grounded the aircraft before it left American airspace.
Jonathan was arrested in Miami after attempting to switch planes.
He refused to speak.
Until his attorney arrived.
Then he asked for me.
Dante immediately said no.
I looked at him.
He stopped.
“Sorry.”
That mattered.
“I’m going.”
He nodded.
“I’ll wait outside.”
At the federal building, Jonathan looked smaller than he had behind his walnut desk.
“Why?”
He smiled.
“Because everyone thought the Morettis were untouchable.”
“That doesn’t answer me.”
“I spent seven years moving legitimate money around men who made fortunes illegally.”
“So you decided theft made you righteous?”
His smile disappeared.
“You don’t know what your foundation is.”
“I built it.”
“You built the public side.”
My stomach tightened.
“What does that mean?”
Jonathan slid a document across the table.
A second accounting structure.
For years, Moretti companies had made anonymous foundation donations.
Some were legitimate.
Others were restitution.
Money quietly returned from old criminal operations.
My foundation had become a laundering mechanism in reverse.
Dirty money entered legitimate charitable projects permanently.
No profit returned to the family.
Legally complicated.
Morally stranger.
“Who authorized it?”
“Vittorio originally.”
“Dante?”
“He knew some family money entered the foundation. He didn’t know how much.”
Another thing he had not told me.
Another conversation for later.
Jonathan leaned forward.
“I discovered North Meridian two years ago. I knew if you ever separated, independent control activated.”
“So you encouraged Natalia?”
“No.”
“Then how did you know?”
“Rafael.”
My pulse jumped.
Rafael had approached Jonathan.
He wanted foundation assets protected from Vittorio’s old network.
Jonathan saw opportunity instead.
He forged my signature.
Copied Dante’s biometric credential.
Used Natalia’s affair as camouflage.
Then I asked the question that mattered.
“Why name my baby?”
Jonathan looked genuinely confused.
“I didn’t.”
I stared at him.
“The secondary beneficiary.”
“I never changed it.”
“Who did?”
“I don’t know.”
His confusion appeared real.
Then a federal agent entered and handed me a recovered laptop image.
The beneficiary change had been made using an administrator code older than Jonathan’s employment.
Created by the foundation founder.
Dante.
Except Dante had not technically founded the organization.
The incorporation paperwork predated our marriage by three months.
I had always assumed Dante filed it as a wedding gift.
He hadn’t.
The founder’s signature belonged to Lorenzo Moretti.
Dead for eleven years.
I stared at the date.
“How could Dante’s dead father create our foundation?”
The agent turned another page.
He had not.
The document was prepared before Lorenzo died and held in escrow for years.
Activation condition:
The marriage of Dante Moretti and Isabella Romano.
My entire charity had been planned before Dante and I ever met.

And attached to the founding instrument was one final sealed instruction.
TO BE OPENED ONLY IF ISABELLA IS PREGNANT WITH DANTE’S CHILD.
