Chapter 6 - MY FATHER DID NOT DIE THE WAY I WAS TOLD

Rafael confessed before we ever reached him.

Not to us.

To a camera.

Natalia sent the video at 3:40 a.m.

Rafael sat tied beneath a warehouse light.

His face was swollen.

“You want the truth?” he said.

Natalia’s voice came from behind the camera.

“Tell Isabella.”

Rafael looked into the lens.

“Carlo Romano discovered the trust structure six years ago.”

My breathing changed.

“He knew Lorenzo had named Isabella inside North Meridian. He was preparing to tell her.”

Dante stood beside me in silence.

Rafael continued.

“I asked Carlo to wait.”

“Why?” Natalia demanded.

“Because Isabella was dating Dante.”

My chest tightened.

Six years ago.

Dante and I had been together two years.

Not yet married.

Rafael had known.

He knew exactly what our marriage could activate.

“He refused,” Rafael said.

“What did you do?”

“I met him at the hotel.”

“What happened?”

Rafael looked away.

“We argued.”

“Did you kill him?”

“No.”

“Did you touch him?”

Rafael’s face collapsed.

“I pushed him.”

I stopped breathing.

My father had fallen.

Hit his head.

Rafael panicked.

Instead of calling an ambulance immediately, he moved him.

By the time medical help arrived, Carlo was unconscious.

The brain injury caused complications.

The family pressured doctors to describe the event as a stroke.

Three days later, my father died.

I covered my mouth.

Dante whispered my name.

I stepped away from him.

Not because he knew.

I could see he did not.

Because his surname suddenly felt poisonous.

The video continued.

Natalia asked:

“Who ordered you to hide it?”

Rafael whispered one word.

“Vittorio.”

Dante’s grandfather.

Dead four years.

The old Moretti patriarch had known about the trusts.

Known about my father.

Known about me.

And had spent years ensuring Dante never discovered why his marriage mattered financially.

Then Natalia stepped into frame.

For the first time, I noticed she was crying.

“This is why my father died too.”

Rafael looked at her.

“Angelo betrayed Lorenzo.”

“No.”

“He did.”

“He found out Vittorio planned to kill Lorenzo.”

Dante stiffened.

Natalia continued.

“My father tried to stop it.”

Rafael shook his head.

“You don’t know what happened.”

“Then tell me.”

Rafael looked directly into the camera.

“Lorenzo’s death was supposed to be mine.”

The room inside Elias’s safe house went silent.

Rafael explained.

Vittorio wanted his younger son dead because Rafael planned to testify about criminal accounts.

Lorenzo discovered the plot.

He borrowed Rafael’s boat that evening to move evidence.

The explosion killed the wrong brother.

That meant Dante’s father had died because he was trying to protect Rafael.

Rafael spent twenty-three years carrying that guilt.

Then he had protected Vittorio anyway.

“Why?” Natalia demanded.

“Because fear makes cowards out of men who call themselves loyal.”

Dante looked as though the words struck him physically.

Then Natalia moved closer to the camera.

“Isabella, Rafael has something your father left behind.”

She held up a small red notebook.

I recognized it.

My father carried one exactly like it everywhere.

“He wrote down the names of every person involved.”

My heart hammered.

“And one of those names is Dante Moretti.”

I turned toward my husband.

May you like

Dante looked as shocked as I felt.

The video cut to black.
