Chapter 9 - THE NIGHT THE SAFE HOUSE BECAME A TRAP

The safe house alarm activated at 3:17 a.m.

Roman immediately reached for a gun.

There was none.

Federal facility.

No personal weapons.

Good.

Infuriating.

Useful.

Agents moved.

Norah lifted Grace.

Roman took Elias.

They followed instructions.

No argument.

No heroics.

The building entered lockdown.

Then power failed.

Emergency lights came on.

Miriam swore.

“Internal compromise.”

Roman looked at her.

“Someone inside?”

“Yes.”

A secure facility was only safe until one person sold a door code.

The backup corridor opened.

An agent motioned them forward.

Roman stopped.

Something was wrong.

The agent’s holster sat too high.

Federal agents wore issued placement.

This man’s was custom.

Roman pulled Norah backward.

The agent reached inside his jacket.

Miriam shouted.

Another officer tackled him.

A shot hit the ceiling.

Grace screamed.

Elias woke.

Chaos.

Roman could have attacked.

Instead, he covered the children.

That was the choice.

Not revenge.

Protection.

The fake agent was restrained.

His phone contained messages from Matteo.

One instruction:

IF EXTRACTION FAILS, TRIGGER MEDICAL EVACUATION.

Norah stared.

“Medical?”

Grace had a fever.

That suddenly felt less innocent.

Miriam called the pediatrician.

Blood tests.

Fast.

Grace had been exposed to a mild sedative through contaminated infant medicine.

Not lethal.

Designed to cause symptoms requiring hospital transfer.

Norah nearly collapsed.

Roman caught her.

Then stopped.

“Can I?”

She nodded.

He held her.

For the first time, she cried against him willingly.

Matteo had planned to move them through an ambulance route he controlled.

A second team waited outside.

Federal agents arrested them.

The safe house held.

By sunrise, Matteo’s network was collapsing.

Banks frozen.

Employees arrested.

Warehouses searched.

Roman did nothing but sit beside Grace.

That surprised everyone.

Especially Roman.

Then Teresa asked to speak with Norah alone.

Roman hated the idea.

Norah chose to go.

He let her.

Teresa sat behind protective glass.

Elegant.

Composed.

No remorse.

“You’re thinner,” she told Norah.

Norah stared.

“Why Elias?”

“Because the Moretti family needs continuity.”

“He’s a baby.”

“He’s an heir.”

“No.”

Norah leaned closer.

“He’s a child.”

Teresa’s expression hardened.

“You don’t understand families like ours.”

“No.”

Norah looked at her.

“I understand exactly.”

Then Teresa said:

“Roman will never leave the life.”

Norah’s face changed.

Teresa smiled.

“He can pretend for you.”

“Why are you telling me this?”

“Because eventually blood wins.”

Norah stood.

Teresa’s smile widened.

Then:

“Ask Roman who he killed three days before your wedding.”

Norah stopped.

A new secret.

A dangerous one.

May you like

Teresa whispered:

“He never told you because the dead man was your brother.”
