Chapter 12 - THE BETRAYAL CARLO CALLED MERCY

Carlo asked Roman to come alone.
Roman refused.
“Norah comes if she wants.”
She did.
They met under federal supervision in a hospital interview room.
Carlo’s shoulder was bandaged.
His face looked gray.
Roman sat across from him.
“You arranged the flight.”
Carlo nodded.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“To force you to see them.”
Norah stared.
“You knew where I was?”
“For three months.”
Her face hardened.
“You watched me struggle with two infants and said nothing?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Vittorio asked me to wait.”
Roman laughed bitterly.
“Of course.”
Carlo continued.
“He believed if you found Norah before Matteo was exposed, you’d bring her back into the organization.”
Roman didn’t deny it.
Twelve months earlier, that was exactly what he would have done.
“He wanted you to see your children somewhere you had no men.”
Carlo said.
“No compound. No guns. No control.”
The commercial flight.
A metal tube full of strangers.
Roman forced into proximity without power.
Vittorio’s final lesson.
Roman hated the manipulation.
He also understood it.
Norah did not forgive Carlo.
Neither did Roman.
But truth mattered.
“Why tell me not to acknowledge them?”
Roman asked.
“Because Teresa had access to the trust before Sofia stepped in.”
Carlo looked at Norah.
“If you had filed paternity immediately at JFK, Teresa would have known before federal protections were ready.”
“So you delayed us.”
“Yes.”
“By lying.”
“Yes.”
Roman leaned back.
“I’m tired of everyone loving me through lies.”
Carlo lowered his eyes.
“I know.”
Then Norah asked:
“Why did you text, ‘If you love them, do not let the trust see them’?”
Carlo answered:
“Because that was Vittorio’s phrase.”
Roman frowned.
Carlo reached into an evidence envelope.
A final handwritten note from Vittorio.
If Roman finds Norah before the audit is secured, tell him this: Love them enough not to claim them until claiming them is safe.
Norah read it.
Then looked at Roman.
“He meant legal recognition.”
“Yes.”
Carlo swallowed.
“I shortened it.”
Roman rubbed his face.
“You shortened it into something that sounded like a threat.”
“I was under pressure.”
Norah almost laughed.
“Men in this family desperately need communication lessons.”
Even Carlo smiled weakly.
Then he gave them one more thing.
A key.
Vittorio’s private lake house.
“I never opened the room.”
“What room?”
“The nursery.”
Roman froze.
“There was no nursery.”
“Yes.”
Carlo’s eyes filled.
“Your father built one after he learned Norah was pregnant.”
Norah stopped breathing.
“How did he know?”
“Insurance records.”
Roman looked at her.
The same accidental billing that exposed her to Matteo had also told Vittorio.
He had known about his grandchildren.
Before Roman.
May you like
The nursery waited untouched.
And inside it, Vittorio had left one last recording.
