Chapter 9 - THE CHILD WHO HADN’T BEEN BORN YET

Emily did not sleep that night.
Neither did Adrian.
Evan slept between secure rooms at Adrian’s estate, guarded without being made to feel imprisoned.
At three in the morning, Emily found Adrian in the kitchen making tea badly.
“You boil water like a man with employees.”
He looked at the kettle.
“I have never been criticized for this before.”
“Everyone is afraid of you.”
“You aren’t.”
“I build surgical robots. Your eyebrows don’t scare me.”
He smiled.
The moment almost felt normal.
Then she remembered the unborn child.
“Do you think we should find the woman?”
“Yes.”
“Even if she doesn’t know?”
“Especially if she doesn’t know.”
They agreed immediately.
No claim on the pregnancy.
No assumption.
No language about “their” baby.
A woman’s body had already been violated once in this story.
Emily would not participate in another version.
Julian’s archive contained one clue.
A payment to a prenatal clinic in Milwaukee.
Federal investigators obtained lawful records through appropriate channels.
One patient had been referred under a Helix-linked research code.
Her name was Rachel Owens.
Thirty-two.
Married.
Four months pregnant.
When contacted, Rachel believed she had conceived through IVF using her own egg and her husband’s sperm.
Emily felt physically ill.
A second family had been deceived.
Testing through Rachel’s physicians, with her informed consent, eventually confirmed the embryo was not genetically related to Rachel or her husband.
It was genetically consistent with Emily and Adrian.
Rachel cried.
Her husband cried.
Emily sat across from them and refused to make their pain about herself.
“I’m sorry.”
Rachel looked at her.
“You didn’t do this.”
“Neither did you.”
That mattered.
Rachel placed one hand over her stomach.
“What happens now?”
“Whatever you decide,” Emily said.
Adrian nodded.
“You owe us nothing.”
Rachel’s husband looked stunned.
“You don’t want the baby?”
Emily’s throat tightened.
“That isn’t the right question.”
She remembered being twenty-two.
People deciding what was best.
People turning pregnancy into ownership.
“The baby is not property.”
Rachel began crying harder.
“Thank you.”
She chose to continue the pregnancy.
She and her husband needed time to decide what parenthood would mean after the truth.
Emily promised legal and financial support without conditions.
Adrian agreed.
No secret contracts.
No pressure.
Everything transparent.
That afternoon, Evan met Emily again under calmer circumstances.
He showed her his Lego robot.
She showed him how one joint could move differently.
He studied her.
“Did you want me?”
The question pierced her.
“Yes.”
“Then why did you give me away?”
Emily did not lie.
“Because I was scared and someone I trusted convinced me you would have a better life without me.”
“Was he right?”
Emily looked toward Adrian across the room.
Evan clearly loved him.
Had been loved by him.
That truth mattered too.
“You have had a good father.”
Evan nodded.
“But?”
“But I wish I had been allowed to know you.”
He thought about that.
“Me too.”
Then:
“Can I call you Mom?”
Emily’s eyes filled.
“You can call me whatever feels right.”
“Mom is shorter.”
She laughed.
“Efficient.”
He smiled.
That smile looked like hers.
Later, Adrian joined her on the terrace.
“You handled that well.”
“I’m shaking.”
“So am I.”
“You don’t look it.”
“Years of practice.”
For the first time, Emily understood Adrian’s coldness differently.
Not absence of feeling.
Containment.
Like her.
Then his phone rang.
Federal investigators had found Simon Cross.
Not arrested.
Located.
He had entered Canada under a false identity two days earlier.
But he left something in Chicago.
A storage facility.
Inside were Helix records.
Embryo tanks.
Old photographs.
And one sealed envelope labeled:
FOR EMILY CARTER, AFTER SHE MEETS HER SON.
Emily opened it.
Inside was a photograph of her holding newborn Evan.
She had never known anyone took it.
On the back, Simon had written:
YOU WERE ALWAYS THE VARIABLE I COULD NOT CONTROL.
Beneath that:
ASK ADRIAN WHAT HIS FATHER OFFERED YOU SEVEN YEARS AGO.
Emily turned toward Adrian.
His face changed.
“Offered me what?”
Adrian looked genuinely confused.
Then Martin, standing near the door, closed his eyes.
May you like
Emily understood.
Once again, Martin knew.
