Chapter 5 - THE MAN WHO STOLE MY NAME FROM MY SON

The first birth certificate was fake.
That did not make it harmless.
Julian Cross was listed as Evan’s father.
A woman named Catherine Cross was listed as his mother.
Emily had never heard of her.
Adrian’s attorneys located Catherine in less than six hours.
She was Julian’s sister.
A school administrator in Arizona.
When contacted, she sounded horrified.
“I never had a child.”
Her identity had been used without her knowledge.
The certificate existed for eleven days.
Then it was replaced during Evan’s private guardianship placement.
Emily looked at the chain of records.
Her son had been born from one crime and passed through several lies before he could even focus his eyes.
“What was Julian trying to do?” she asked.
Miriam believed the false certificate allowed Julian to remove Evan from California without triggering scrutiny around Emily’s surrender documents.
“He was creating a legal bridge.”
“A bridge built out of fraud.”
“Yes.”
Adrian stood across the conference room at Meridian’s Chicago headquarters.
They had moved the investigation there because Emily trusted her own security and legal team more than anyone else.
Evan was in school.
He knew one thing now.
Emily was his biological mother.
They had told him together.
Carefully.
No adult accusations.
No terrifying details.
Evan cried.
Emily cried harder.
Then he asked the question she feared.
“Are you taking me away from Father?”
“No.”
The answer came immediately.
Adrian looked at her.
Emily looked back.
“I’m not taking you from anyone.”
Evan threw his arms around her.
It was their first hug.
Seven years late.
Emily felt the weight of his head against her chest and almost collapsed from how ordinary it felt.
Children were supposed to fit there.
After school, he returned to Adrian’s home.
Emily spent the evening with attorneys and Julian’s flash drive.
It contained forty-three files.
Most were encrypted.
One video opened.
Julian appeared.
Older than Emily remembered.
Thinner.
Terrified.
He had recorded it seven months earlier.
“Emily, if you’re seeing this, then you found Evan.”
She hated hearing his voice.
“I know you have every reason to hate me.”
“Excellent start,” Emily whispered.
Adrian sat beside her.
Julian continued.
“I was hired by Simon to monitor you after the unauthorized transfer.”
Emily’s hands curled.
“At first, I told myself I was protecting the clinic. Then I fell in love with you.”
Emily laughed bitterly.
Of course he would say that.
“But loving you did not make me brave.”
At least he knew.
“When you became pregnant, Simon ordered me to keep you calm, make sure you completed the pregnancy, and convince you to surrender the child immediately after birth.”
Adrian’s jaw hardened.
“Dominic was already dying. Simon believed the Kane family should never know the pregnancy succeeded.”
Emily looked at Adrian.
So Adrian’s father may never have known Evan survived.
Julian continued.
“I planned to do exactly what Simon wanted.”
Emily felt sick.
“Then Evan was born.”
Julian’s face changed.
“I held him while you slept.”
Emily stopped breathing.
“And he looked like you.”
Tears burned behind her eyes.
“I realized I had spent nine months helping men treat two human beings like laboratory property.”
Julian secretly photographed Evan’s records.
He contacted Miriam.
He falsified documents to move Evan.
Then he manipulated Emily into surrender because he believed if Simon thought the adoption was complete and Emily had willingly disappeared, both mother and child might survive.
Emily stood.
“That doesn’t make it better.”
Adrian paused the video.
“No.”
“He could have told me.”
“Yes.”
“He could have taken me with him.”
“Yes.”
“He decided for me.”
“Yes.”
Emily looked at Adrian.
“You don’t defend him.”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because protection without consent becomes control very quickly.”
That silenced her.
He understood more than she expected.
They resumed.
Julian said Sarah Bell later discovered evidence of the unauthorized embryo transfer.
She contacted him.
Together they began reconstructing Helix records.
Then Sarah was killed.
Julian went into hiding.
He believed Simon ordered it.
“Simon is alive,” Julian said.
Emily leaned forward.
“He changed his name.”
The screen displayed a photograph.
An older man.
Gray hair.
Glasses.
Emily did not recognize him.
Adrian did.
He stood so abruptly his chair moved backward.
“No.”
Emily looked at him.
“Who is that?”
Adrian stared at the screen.
“Dr. Samuel Crane.”
“Who?”
“My family physician.”
Emily felt cold.
Adrian continued.
“He has treated Evan since infancy.”
Julian’s video ended with one final warning:
SIMON NEVER STOPPED MONITORING THE CHILD.
Emily stared at the frozen image.

Her son’s pediatrician was the man who had helped create him illegally.
And he had been beside Evan for seven years.
