Chapter 15 - The Whispers of Truth

The weekend arrived, bringing with it a false sense of normalcy to the household.

Sarah tried to spend as much quality time with Leo as possible, hoping to draw him out of his strange shell.

They sat on the couch watching movies, but Leo flinched every single time Mark walked through the living room.

Sarah noticed the flinch.

She also noticed the way Leo kept his long sleeves pulled down, even when the house was uncomfortably warm.

On Sunday afternoon, while Mark was taking a shower, Sarah walked into Leo's room with a basket of clean laundry.

Leo was sitting on the edge of his bed, rubbing the fading red blister on his hand.

"Leo, what happened to your hand?" Sarah asked gently, setting the laundry basket on the floor.

Leo quickly hid his hand behind his back, his eyes widening in sudden, unmistakable panic.

"It is nothing, Mom, I just accidentally burned it on the stove while making dinner," he stammered nervously.

Sarah sat down next to him, gently pulling his hand forward to examine the angry red mark.

"This does not look like a stove burn, Leo," she said quietly, her voice laced with deep maternal concern.

"Please tell me the truth."

Leo looked at his mother's loving eyes, and for a split second, the heavy dam holding back his tears almost broke.

He opened his mouth to speak, to tell her about the spaghetti, the insults, and the grueling punishments.

But the sound of the bathroom door opening down the hall sent a violent jolt of pure terror through his spine.

"It was an accident, Mom, I promise," Leo insisted, pulling his hand away and standing up quickly.

Sarah watched him retreat to the desk, her heart breaking at the sight of her son acting like a frightened animal.

She did not push him any further, knowing that forcing the issue would only make him withdraw deeper into his shell.

Instead, Sarah decided to observe the household dynamics in complete, invisible silence.

Later that evening, she stood quietly in the hallway, listening to Mark speak to Leo in the kitchen.

"Did you take out the trash like I told you, you lazy brat?" Mark hissed, his voice completely devoid of the charm he used around Sarah.

"Yes, Uncle Mark," Leo answered meekly.

"You better have, because if Sarah finds out how useless you are, she will throw you out on the street," Mark threatened cruelly.

Sarah pressed her hand against her mouth to muffle a sharp gasp of absolute horror.

The blood rushed roaring into her ears as she realized the monster she had unknowingly invited into her home.

Her own brother was systematically destroying her beautiful, gentle son.

A cold, calculating fury ignited deep within Sarah's soul, replacing her confusion with unyielding maternal rage.

She slowly backed away into the shadows, formulating a plan to expose Mark's cruelty once and for all.
