Chapter 9 - MY FATHER WAS NOT MY FATHER

I did not believe Peter.

Then James arrived.

And I believed his face.

He sat across from me in Nico’s library.

Hands folded.

Broken.

“Tell me.”

James looked at Nico.

“Leave.”

“No.”

I answered for my husband.

James flinched.

Good.

“Tell me.”

“Eleanor was pregnant when I married her.”

Simple.

Devastating.

“Who?”

“A man named Michael Vance.”

I stared.

“Vance?”

Peter’s hidden file suddenly made sense.

Michael Vance had been Daniel Vance’s uncle? No, keep isolated story, avoid cross-story. Need not mention.

“Who was he?”

“A federal prosecutor.”

Of course.

Another legal shadow.

“He investigated organized crime and construction corruption.”

“Caruso?”

“Among others.”

Nico stiffened.

“Did he investigate my father?”

“Yes.”

James continued.

Michael and my mother loved each other.

Then Michael disappeared during an investigation.

Presumed dead.

Eleanor married James months later.

He raised me.

“Did you know I wasn’t yours?”

“From the beginning.”

“Then you are my father.”

His eyes filled.

That mattered.

Biology changed facts.

Not childhood.

But Peter’s plan depended on legal language.

My mother’s trust apparently included assets inherited through Michael Vance.

Those holdings had been frozen because my paternity was hidden.

Once my true birth certificate surfaced, I could claim them.

How much?

Eight hundred million dollars in land and infrastructure rights.

I laughed.

Not joy.

Exhaustion.

Every dead adult in my life had hidden a fortune beneath another secret.

Then Rebecca called.

Michael Vance might not be dead.

I stared at the phone.

“Stop.”

“I wish I could.”

A federal witness-protection record existed under sealed status.

Age matched.

Background matched.

Alias:

Michael Vale.

Location withheld.

Alive.

My biological father had lived somewhere for twenty-four years while James raised me.

I did not know how to feel.

So I chose the next useful question.

“What does Peter need the birth certificate for?”

Rebecca answered.

“To prove the Vance assets pass to you.”

“And then?”

“Your activated marriage trust merges voting control.”

Nico understood.

“Making Evelyn one of the most powerful private property owners in the Northeast.”

I looked at him.

“Please don’t say that like it’s attractive.”

“It is mildly terrifying.”

Good.

Then Rebecca added:

“Peter filed an emergency petition this morning.”

“For what?”

“To declare James mentally incompetent.”

My father stood.

“What?”

If Peter became executor and trustee over James’s interests, then incapacitated Nico, he could control both sides around me.

Not ownership.

Control.

Always control.

Then the library door opened.

A guard entered.

“Sir.”

“What?”

“We found Andrew Mercer.”

“Where?”

“Airport.”

“Leaving?”

“No.”

“Arriving.”

From London.

With someone.

An older man.

Gray hair.

Federal agents detained both.

The man gave one name.

Michael Vance.

My biological father had just returned to New York.

And the first thing he asked was whether Peter Hart had already married me to a Caruso.
