Chapter 10 - THE FATHER WHO DISAPPEARED CAME BACK

Michael Vance did not hug me.

I respected that.

He stood inside a federal conference room and looked at me like a man staring at a life he had missed.

“You look like Eleanor.”

Everybody said that.

Today it hurt.

“Why did you leave?”

He did not insult me with protection.

“I was a coward.”

That got my attention.

“I was investigating a network tied to organized crime, public construction, and political bribery. Somebody inside my office sold witness names.”

“Peter?”

“Yes.”

“Did he try to kill you?”

“Yes.”

“Why stay gone after?”

Michael looked at James.

“Because James was raising you.”

“That isn’t enough.”

“No.”

Good.

“I convinced myself returning would endanger you. Then years passed. Fear became habit.”

Honest.

Still terrible.

I appreciated both truths.

Andrew Mercer sat in another room cooperating.

Peter had controlled him through financial crimes and threats.

Andrew was guilty.

Also used.

Again, reality refused simple villains.

“What does Peter want now?”

Michael answered:

“The joint trust.”

“What for?”

“To privatize public infrastructure under shell ownership.”

Nico frowned.

“Explain.”

Peter had spent decades accumulating options on ports, bridges, freight terminals, and municipal land.

The Hart-Caruso-Vance trust controlled the final pieces.

Once merged, he could sell operating rights to foreign investment entities he secretly owned.

Billions.

But there was another problem.

My mother designed the trust with a morality clause.

I almost laughed.

“What?”

If any trustee was convicted of fraud, coercion, or violence tied to acquisition, that trustee was permanently removed and assets shifted to independent public-benefit management.

Peter could not simply force control.

He needed clean signatures.

Mine.

Nico’s.

James’s.

He needed us alive.

For now.

“That’s why he staged threats around me,” I said.

Michael nodded.

“He wanted the Caruso marriage.”

“Why threaten me into it?”

“So James would move fast.”

My father closed his eyes.

Peter manipulated everyone.

The bullet photograph.

The compromised security.

The fear.

Then Nico asked:

“What happens if Evelyn refuses to sign anything?”

Michael looked at me.

“The assets freeze.”

“For how long?”

“Twenty-one years.”

Good.

“Then we freeze them.”

Everyone stared.

I shrugged.

“What?”

Michael almost smiled.

“You sound like Eleanor.”

“Apparently she had good instincts.”

Then Rebecca entered quickly.

“Problem.”

“What?”

“Peter filed the documents already.”

My stomach dropped.

“Without my signature?”

“With one.”

Forgery.

Again.

But this signature would need notarization.

Biometric confirmation.

Witnesses.

“He has all of that?”

Rebecca’s expression tightened.

“He used footage from your marriage license signing.”

Video verification.

Nico stood.

“Can we stop transfer?”

“Only if Evelyn appears before the trust board in person by noon tomorrow.”

“Where?”

“Albany.”

Three hours.

Easy.

Then Rebecca said:

“Peter knows.”

Of course.

“And he has blocked the Caruso aircraft.”

We could drive.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

Peter.

I answered.

“Evie.”

“Stop calling me that.”

He laughed.

“You always were dramatic.”

“Where are you?”

“Somewhere you won’t reach before noon.”

“What do you want?”

“Nothing now.”

“I don’t believe you.”

“You already gave me what I needed.”

“What?”

“Your marriage.”

He hung up.

Nico looked at me.

Then his security chief rushed in.

“Nico.”

“What?”

“The west wing.”

Remember the forbidden wing.

My pulse jumped.

“What about it?”

“Someone broke into the archive.”

Nico went white.

Inside the west wing was not mafia cash.

Not weapons.

Not business ledgers.

It held the Caruso family’s original legal records.

Including Nico’s birth certificate.

And when we reached the archive, one file was missing.

His.

May you like

Peter was not trying only to control my identity.

He was about to prove something about Nico too.
