Chapter 5 - THE BOARD MEETING I WASN'T SUPPOSED TO SURVIVE

Friday arrived faster than Claire wanted.

Grant spent Thursday evening behaving like a perfect husband.

He cooked pasta.

Opened wine.

Asked whether her headache had improved.

Claire declined the wine.

His eyes lingered on her glass.

“Not drinking?”

“Early meeting.”

He smiled.

“Try not to work yourself sick.”

Claire smiled back.

“I’ll try.”

At 8:55 Friday morning, she entered Alder Row’s boardroom.

Grant was already there.

He wore a dark charcoal suit.

Stephen Mercer sat at the head of the table.

Rebecca stood by the windows.

Daniel sat pale and silent.

Hannah occupied Claire’s usual seat.

The room smelled like coffee and betrayal.

Stephen cleared his throat.

“Claire, thank you for joining us.”

She almost laughed.

“It’s my company.”

Grant lowered his eyes.

Stephen began with concern.

Always concern.

Cancelled meetings.

Late nights.

Medication.

Headaches.

Emotional volatility.

Grant produced text messages from arguments.

Screenshots with no context.

Rebecca described Claire forgetting an appointment.

Stephen presented an email Claire had supposedly sent at 2:14 a.m. approving a financial transfer she could not remember.

Manufactured evidence.

Layer by layer.

“Are you suggesting I’m incompetent?” Claire asked.

Stephen looked wounded.

“We’re suggesting a temporary leave.”

“For my health.”

“Yes.”

Grant touched her arm.

“We love you.”

Claire looked at his hand.

Then at him.

“Remove it.”

He did.

The vote began.

Three directors supported leave.

Two opposed.

Stephen voted yes.

Daniel’s turn came.

Grant stared at him.

Daniel swallowed.

Then said, “No.”

Grant’s face changed.

Daniel continued.

“And I would like the record to reflect that I participated in unauthorized disclosure of corporate information after being coerced by Grant Whitmore.”

Silence exploded.

Grant stood.

“That’s absurd.”

Claire remained seated.

“Sit down.”

He stared.

For the first time in eight years, he obeyed.

Hannah distributed forensic reports.

Unauthorized access.

The fake acquisition leak.

Grant’s downloads.

Rebecca’s home entry.

Medication analysis.

Stephen turned white.

Rebecca whispered, “This is insane.”

Noah entered with Evelyn and two independent investigators.

Grant looked at Claire.

“You planned this.”

“No.”

Her voice remained calm.

“You planned this.”

She placed the evidence on the table.

“I simply noticed.”

Stephen attempted to adjourn.

Claire stopped him.

“We’re not finished.”

She invoked the voting rights attached to her founder shares.

Sixty-four percent.

Enough to remove Stephen as chairman pending investigation.

Grant laughed bitterly.

“You think this protects you?”

Claire looked at him.

“From you?”

“Yes.”

His mask finally slipped.

“You built Alder Row during our marriage.”

“I started it three years before we married.”

“I helped.”

“You attended dinners.”

“I supported you.”

“So did Hannah. She doesn’t own my company.”

Grant’s face hardened.

“My attorneys disagree.”

Evelyn leaned forward.

“Your attorneys may enjoy being wrong.”

Grant opened his briefcase.

He removed a notarized document.

Claire stared at it.

POSTMARITAL EQUITY AGREEMENT.

According to the agreement, Claire had voluntarily promised Grant thirty-two percent of her Alder Row holdings if their marriage ended after more than seven years.

Her signature appeared at the bottom.

Notarized.

Witnessed.

Claire had never seen it before.

Evelyn took the paper.

“When was this supposedly signed?”

“Four years ago.”

Grant smiled.

“You don’t remember?”

“No.”

His eyes gleamed.

“Maybe those memory issues started earlier than we thought.”

Claire wanted to break something.

Instead, she looked at the notary.

MELISSA ANN BARNES.

Noah quietly typed the name into his phone.

Thirty seconds later, he looked up.

His expression was strange.

“What?”

“The notary died five years ago.”

The room went silent.

May you like

The document was dated four years ago.

Grant had just submitted a contract notarized by a dead woman.
