Chapter 1 - The Hand No One Expected Him to Raise

“Who are you?”
Rico Moretti’s voice was quiet enough to make Clara more afraid than if he had shouted.
She stopped beside the table, holding the glass of warm milk with both hands. Around them, fifty diners watched without pretending not to. Dante stood three feet away with blood on his bitten hand. Marco looked ready to faint.
Clara ignored every adult.
She lowered herself until she was at Leo’s eye level.
The boy was still screaming, but now his cries came in broken gasps. His tiny fists were pressed against his ears.
“Hey, Leo,” Clara whispered. “Nobody’s going to touch you.”
Rico’s eyes narrowed.
“How do you know his name?”
“Everyone in the room has said it ten times.”
Clara placed the milk on the table but did not push it toward him.
“My mom used to make this when thunderstorms scared me. Warm milk, one sugar cube. You don’t have to drink it.”
Leo’s crying weakened.
Clara slowly tapped the table twice.
Tap. Tap.
Leo froze.
Then she tapped again.
Tap. Tap.
Something changed in the child’s face.
He stared at her.
Rico leaned forward.
For the first time in six months, Leo stopped screaming completely.
The entire restaurant seemed to stop breathing with him.
Leo reached for the glass, took one shaky sip, then another.
Marco crossed himself.
Dante stared as though Clara had performed surgery with a butter knife.
Rico said nothing.
Then Leo slowly lifted his small left hand.
He touched Clara’s cheek.
Clara went rigid.
The boy stared directly into her eyes and whispered the clearest words he had spoken since his mother died.
“Mama did that.”
Rico’s face drained of color.
Clara swallowed.
“What did Mama do, sweetheart?”
Leo tapped Clara’s cheek twice.
Then he pointed toward the kitchen.
And whispered:
“Mama lady there.”
Rico’s chair scraped backward.
“What did he just say?”
Leo pointed again.
Not toward Clara.
Not toward the kitchen door.
Toward a woman standing behind the narrow glass window in the swinging door.
A woman who immediately disappeared when Rico looked up.

And Clara recognized her.
She was the woman who had hired Clara two weeks earlier.
