Chapter 14 - THE LAST BETRAYAL

“They planned for me to meet you.”

Dante stared at the document.

Aurora felt the room tilt.

“What do you mean?”

Dante enlarged the surveillance photographs.

They showed her bakery.

The Celestial Hotel.

Her usual delivery entrance.

Even the elevator bank.

The meeting that had seemed like an accident had been anticipated.

But not every part of it had gone according to plan.

The conspirators had expected Braden to frighten Aurora into seeking protection from Dante.

Then they intended to manipulate the situation.

If Dante became involved, Victor planned to frame him for the theft of Aurora's inheritance.

The elevator attack had been a contingency designed to eliminate both of them if the original scheme failed.

Aurora stared at Dante.

“So even the day we met...”

“They tried to control it.”

“But they didn't control you.”

Dante shook his head.

“No.”

He looked directly into her eyes.

“And they never controlled your decision to run away from Braden.”

Something settled inside Aurora.

For years, she had blamed herself for trusting the wrong people.

But escaping Braden had been her own choice.

Building a bakery career had been her own achievement.

And asking for help hadn't made her weak.

It had helped expose the people who wanted her powerless.

Two days later, independent DNA results confirmed that Victor Moretti was Aurora's biological father.

Dante was her cousin.

The discovery gave them a complicated family connection, but one both eventually welcomed.

The authorities continued building their cases against Victor, Richard, and Margaret.

The financial investigation resulted in frozen accounts, recovered records, and proceedings to restore Aurora's assets.

Braden faced charges connected to the threats at the bakery.

His cooperation helped investigators locate additional evidence, but it did not erase what he had done.

On the evening before Aurora's birthday, Dante invited her and Elena to the Celestial's private dining room.

Aurora arrived expecting dinner.

Instead, she found a table covered with documents.

Dante smiled.

“These belong to you.”

Aurora opened the first folder.

Inside was the deed to the building that housed her bakery.

Her name appeared as the new owner.

She looked at Dante in disbelief.

“How?”

“Your attorney recovered it from one of the fraudulent holding companies. The transfer was finalized this afternoon.”

Tears filled Aurora's eyes.

Then she saw a second folder.

It contained a letter dated seventeen years earlier.

Written by Lorenzo Moretti.

Dante said quietly, “My father wanted you to receive this someday.”

Aurora opened it.

May you like

The final sentence made her cry.

One day, Aurora, I hope you discover that your greatest inheritance was never money. It was the courage your mother gave you.
