Chapter 12 - THE MAN WHO WANTED THE SAFE EMPTY

Dominic walked into the kennel house smiling.
Evelyn stood beside him.
Unrestrained.
That confused me first.
Then I saw the small device in his hand.
Remote trigger.
Not explosives.
A medical injector attached beneath Evelyn’s sleeve.
Dominic pressed one button and she winced.
“Heart medication,” he said. “Too much would be unfortunate.”
Jared’s face turned to stone.
“What do you want?”
“The safe opened.”
“You already know it destroys the files if you touch it.”
Dominic smiled.
“Then don’t make me touch it.”
He wanted Jared and Evelyn to open the safe legitimately.
Then Dominic could destroy the contents manually.
Federal agents were listening from outside, but they couldn’t rush him while he controlled the injector.
I stood near Nero.
Dominic finally noticed me.
“Daniel’s daughter.”
My stomach tightened.
“You remember him?”
“Oh, yes.”
“You helped kill him.”
Dominic shrugged.
“Arthur gave the order.”
“And you carried it out.”
“Family loyalty.”
Jared’s voice became dangerously quiet.
“You call that loyalty?”
Dominic looked almost amused.
“You still think this is about morality?”
“No.”
Jared stepped closer.
“I think it’s about you being afraid of paper.”
For the first time, Dominic’s smile disappeared.
Evelyn moved toward the scanner.
Jared joined her.
Two green lights.
The safe opened.
Inside were drives, ledgers, recordings, notarized statements.
Enough evidence to dismantle decades of criminal operations.
Dominic raised the remote.
“Back away.”
They did.
He reached for the files.
Nero growled.
Dominic turned.
That tiny distraction was enough.
Evelyn pulled the injector from her sleeve.
Jared lunged.
Dominic hit the remote.
Nothing happened.
I had removed the receiver while he was watching the safe.
Being overlooked was sometimes useful.
Miles tackled Dominic.
Federal agents entered.
No gunfight.
No dramatic execution.
Just shouting, handcuffs, and one furious old man realizing fear no longer controlled the room.
Dominic looked at Jared as agents pulled him up.
“You think they’ll let you walk away?”
Jared said nothing.
Dominic laughed.
“You ran the same empire.”
That truth landed harder than any threat.
Jared had inherited crimes.
He had also committed some.
Maybe not murder.
Maybe not what Dominic had done.
But enough.
Jared looked at the federal prosecutor entering the room.
Then at Evelyn.
Then at me.
“What happens if I cooperate?”
The prosecutor answered carefully.
“That depends on what you admit and what you can prove.”
Miles whispered, “Boss—”
Jared raised one hand.
“No.”
He looked at me.
Not for permission.
Not for absolution.
Just because he wanted me to understand.
“I’m done inheriting excuses.”
Then he surrendered his phone.
His private accounts.
His access codes.
Everything.
I had expected the most feared man in New York to fight to keep his empire.
Instead, he gave it away.
But Dominic laughed one final time.
“You still don’t know where Brendan put the original ledger.”
I turned.
“What?”
Dominic smiled at me.
“He didn’t save Evelyn out of loyalty.”
My chest tightened.
“He saved her because your father left him something too.”

Then Dominic was led away.
And somewhere in New York, Brendan Shaw still held the one document that could decide whether Jared’s confession freed him from Dominic’s shadow—or buried him with it.
