Chapter 11 - THE ROOM BENEATH THE KENNEL

Nero led us himself.
Slowly.
Painfully.
But with absolute certainty.
The Kensington estate looked abandoned from the outside.
Inside, dust covered furniture beneath white sheets.
Family portraits still hung in the hallway.
Arthur.
Jared.
Evelyn.
Dominic.
A respectable dynasty hiding decades of rot.
Nero ignored all of it.
He went straight toward the old kennel house.
Behind it stood six empty runs.
He stopped at the third.
Pawed once.
Then again.
Metal rang beneath dirt.
Jared and Miles cleared the floor.
A steel hatch appeared.
Below it was a narrow staircase.
The underground room smelled dry and old.
Shelves lined every wall.
Files.
Photographs.
Audio tapes.
Bank records.
Arthur Kensington’s private archive.
Daniel had discovered it twenty-two years earlier.
Arthur had hidden it rather than destroy it.
Maybe guilt.
Maybe leverage.
Maybe cowardice.
Maybe all three.
At the center stood a safe requiring two biometric scans.
Jared.
Evelyn.
One scanner accepted Jared.
The second remained red.
“We need her.”
Exactly why Dominic kept Evelyn alive.
But the desk contained one final letter.
JARED AND EVELYN.
Jared opened it.
His father’s handwriting.
If you are reading this together, then I failed to become the man I should have been while there was still time.
Jared stopped.
I watched his face change as he read the rest.
Arthur confessed to ordering my father’s death.
He named the men involved.
He documented Dominic’s crimes.
He admitted his own.
Then he wrote something about Jared.
I raised you to believe power meant never needing anyone.
I was wrong.
That belief destroyed your mother, your childhood, Daniel Thornton, and eventually me.
If you have one chance to build something different, take it.
Jared folded the letter.
For once, he looked less like a mafia boss and more like a son who had inherited a burden he no longer wanted.
Then Nero barked.
Once.
Loud.
We turned.
A security monitor on the wall had activated.
Live camera.
Front gate.
Dominic’s convoy.
And in the back seat of the first vehicle sat Evelyn.
Jared reached for his gun.
I grabbed his wrist.
His eyes snapped to me.
“Your father just told you what power destroyed.”
“He has my sister.”
“I know.”
“You expect me to do nothing?”
“No.”
I held his gaze.
“I expect you not to become the man Dominic already understands how to manipulate.”
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Then Jared slowly released the weapon.
Miles exhaled.
We called the federal team waiting two miles away.
Dominic entered the estate believing Jared was alone.
He wasn’t.
But before the trap could close, my phone buzzed.
A message from Brendan.
DON’T OPEN THE SAFE.
I stared at it.
Another message came.
ARTHUR’S ARCHIVE HAS A SECOND PURPOSE.
Then one final line.
THE SAFE IS RIGGED TO DESTROY EVERYTHING IF DOMINIC’S FINGERPRINT TOUCHES IT.
I looked toward Jared.
May you like
Dominic wasn’t coming to steal the evidence.
He was coming to erase it.
