Chapter 9 - THE BROTHER WHO USED HER NAME

Vincent did not speak for a full minute.
Luca Moretti was five years younger.
Charming.
Reckless.
The brother Vincent had spent half his life cleaning up after.
Six months earlier, Luca claimed he wanted out of Boston.
Vincent gave him money and told him to disappear somewhere quiet.
Apparently Luca chose Switzerland and financial crime.
Evelyn said:
“You didn’t know?”
“No.”
She believed him.
That was new.
Trusting someone without certainty.
Mara traced the transfers.
At first glance, Luca had stolen charity money.
Then she found corresponding deposits.
Every dollar withdrawn from the Hart endowment was replaced within seventy-two hours.
Sometimes with more.
“That makes no sense,” Evelyn said.
Vincent understood.
“Testing.”
Luca had been probing account controls.
Looking for vulnerabilities.
“Why use Evelyn’s identity?”
Mara frowned.
“Because the Hart endowment was keyed to her authorization.”
Someone wanted to simulate legitimate movements.
Vincent called Luca.
No answer.
Again.
Nothing.
Then a secure number rang back.
“Vin.”
Vincent’s face changed.
“You’re alive.”
Luca laughed.
“You sound disappointed.”
“Where are you?”
“Geneva.”
“Why are you using Evelyn Mercer’s identity?”
Silence.
Then:
“Oh.”
Vincent’s jaw tightened.
“Excellent answer.”
Luca sighed.
“I can explain.”
Everyone hated that sentence now.
Luca had discovered suspicious activity in the charity two years earlier.
Small withdrawals routed through third-party vendors.
Father Gabriel told him it was accounting cleanup.
Luca didn’t believe him.
So he tested the system using a dormant identity tied to the endowment.
Evelyn’s.
Without her knowledge.
“Illegal,” Mara said.
“Very,” Luca replied.
“But useful.”
He found someone siphoning tiny amounts.
Over years, it added up.
“Who?” Vincent asked.
“Gabriel.”
Vincent looked toward the priest in custody.
But Luca continued.
“Not for himself.”
“Then?”
“He was paying Thomas Mercer.”
Silence.
Father Gabriel had been secretly paying Thomas for years.
Why?
Luca answered:
“Blackmail.”
Thomas knew Anthony Moretti’s endowment had been built partly from recovered criminal proceeds.
He threatened to expose the origin publicly and destroy the charity’s credibility unless Gabriel paid him.
Vincent’s face hardened.
“So Gabriel kidnapped Lily to destroy the endowment because he was tired of being blackmailed.”
“Yes.”
That made twisted sense.
Evelyn asked:
“Why didn’t you tell Vincent?”
Luca paused.
“Because I didn't trust him.”
Vincent’s face changed.
His own brother.
“Why?”
“Because Dad made him executor.”
Silence.
Luca believed Vincent knew the truth and tolerated Gabriel’s payments to protect the Moretti name.
Vincent looked wounded.
“I didn’t.”
“I know now.”
“Six months.”
“I know.”
Family.
Always secrecy first.
Vincent said:
“Come home.”
Luca laughed softly.
“Not yet.”
“Why?”
“Because Thomas Mercer isn’t the only person who knew about the account.”
Evelyn’s pulse jumped.
“Who else?”
Luca said:
“Grant.”
“We know.”
“No.”
He lowered his voice.
“Grant knew because someone inside the Hart family told him.”
Evelyn froze.
“My family?”
“Yes.”
“My mother is dead.”
“I’m not talking about Helen.”
Luca sent a file.
Birth records.
Helen Hart had another child.
Older.
A son.
Placed for adoption before Evelyn was born.
Evelyn stared.
“My mother had a son?”
“Yes.”
“Who?”
Luca sent the adult identity.
Nathan Cole.
Lily’s new husband.
The room went silent.
Evelyn could not breathe.
Nathan was not simply Grant’s recruited business contact.
May you like
He was Evelyn and Lily’s half-brother.
And apparently, he had known before the wedding.
