Chapter 7 - THE PRIEST WHO KNEW EVERYTHING

Vincent did not go in alone.

He also did not storm the building.

Instead, he called Father Gabriel.

The priest answered.

“You always were stubborn.”

Vincent’s face hardened.

“You always were theatrical.”

Evelyn almost looked at him.

Not the moment.

Gabriel continued:

“Send everyone back.”

“No.”

“Then Lily dies.”

Evelyn grabbed Vincent’s arm.

He looked at her.

She whispered:

“Ask him what he wants.”

Vincent did.

Gabriel laughed.

“Not money.”

Thomas shouted in the background:

“Speak for yourself.”

There it was.

The alliance was broken already.

Gabriel continued:

“I want the Hart endowment dissolved.”

Evelyn frowned.

“Why?”

Vincent put the phone on speaker.

Gabriel answered:

“Because your father used blood money to build a monument to himself.”

Anthony Moretti.

Vincent’s father had recovered stolen funds and redirected them to charity.

Gabriel believed that money remained contaminated.

Vincent said:

“It has housed sick children for twenty years.”

“With stolen money.”

“So your solution is kidnapping?”

Silence.

Gabriel’s moral certainty had apparently survived irony.

Thomas grabbed the phone.

“I don’t care about his conscience. The money belongs to my family.”

Evelyn finally spoke.

“No.”

Grant’s voice shouted:

“Evelyn?”

Her entire body reacted.

Vincent noticed.

“Don’t push yourself.”

She shook her head.

Then spoke louder.

“Grant.”

Silence.

“Let Lily go.”

“Come inside.”

“No.”

“You owe me a conversation.”

She laughed.

The sound surprised everyone.

“I owe you?”

“You disappeared with Moretti.”

“You locked my identity inside debt. You forged my signature. You isolated me. You planned to steal a charity.”

Her voice steadied.

“I owe you nothing.”

Grant’s breathing changed.

“Don’t talk to me like that.”

There he was.

Private Grant.

Even now.

Evelyn felt fear.

Then something else.

Distance.

His anger no longer automatically became her responsibility.

She continued:

“Let Lily go.”

“Sign the transfer.”

“No.”

“I will hurt her.”

Lily shouted from inside:

“Don’t!”

Grant yelled at her.

Evelyn’s face hardened.

Vincent watched.

She said:

“If you hurt my sister, you lose the only leverage you have.”

Grant went silent.

He had trained her to think she was stupid with money.

Bad under pressure.

Dependent.

But before marriage, Evelyn had run design projects worth millions.

She knew negotiation.

He had merely convinced her not to trust herself.

Thomas took the phone back.

“You think you're clever.”

“No.”

Evelyn answered.

“I think you need me alive and cooperative.”

Vincent almost smiled.

Thomas said:

“Come in.”

“Send Lily out first.”

“No.”

“Then no transfer.”

A long silence.

Then Gabriel said:

“Thomas, we need her signature.”

Exactly.

Evelyn muted the phone.

“They’re divided.”

Vincent nodded.

“Thomas wants money. Gabriel wants destruction of the endowment. Grant wants control.”

“Three motives.”

“Three weak points.”

Marco created the plan.

Evelyn would approach the loading door where they could see her.

Not enter.

Vincent’s team would use the distraction to reach Lily from the water-side access.

Evelyn’s pulse hammered.

Vincent asked:

“Can you do this?”

Not “you will.”

Can you.

She nodded.

“Yes.”

She walked alone onto the dock.

Grant appeared at the warehouse door.

He looked almost relieved.

“Evelyn.”

She stopped twenty feet away.

“Where’s Lily?”

“Inside.”

“I need to see her.”

He opened the door wider.

Lily sat behind him.

Her lip was bleeding.

Evelyn’s fear turned into rage.

Grant smiled.

“Come home.”

The words were insane.

After all of this.

He still imagined home as the place where he controlled her.

“No.”

His smile vanished.

“I can forgive this.”

Evelyn stared.

“You can forgive me?”

“Yes.”

That was when she knew there was nothing left to save.

Not one memory.

Not one promise.

Nothing.

“Grant.”

He waited.

“I’m not coming home.”

Behind him, Lily’s eyes filled.

Grant stepped outside.

“Don’t do this.”

“I already did.”

His hand moved toward his coat.

Vincent’s voice sounded from darkness.

“Careful.”

Grant froze.

Vincent emerged several yards away.

Grant laughed bitterly.

“Of course.”

Then gunfire exploded from inside.

Gabriel shouted.

Thomas screamed.

Marco’s team breached from the water side.

Grant turned.

Evelyn ran toward Lily.

A shot cracked.

Grant fell.

Not dead.

Hit in the shoulder by his own father.

Thomas had fired past him at Vincent.

Chaos erupted.

Evelyn reached Lily.

Nathan Cole suddenly appeared from the rear entrance, helping Marco.

He had led them through service plans.

Lily saw him.

Her face changed.

Not relief.

Pain.

He deserved that.

They escaped.

Thomas was arrested after a brief struggle.

Gabriel surrendered.

Grant survived.

When police searched the warehouse, they found documents proving everything.

Forgery.

Fraud.

Kidnapping.

Conspiracy.

But one document shocked Vincent.

A private agreement signed nineteen years earlier.

Anthony Moretti.

Thomas Mercer.

Father Gabriel.

All three.

The agreement showed Anthony had not simply recovered Thomas’s stolen money.

He had made a deal.

Thomas gave up the location of several criminal accounts in exchange for immunity from Moretti retaliation.

Vincent stared.

“My father let him go.”

Gabriel nodded.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To protect you.”

Vincent laughed bitterly.

Of course.

Then Gabriel revealed the final secret.

“Thomas didn’t steal the original forty million alone.”

Vincent looked up.

“Who helped him?”

May you like

Gabriel’s eyes moved toward Evelyn.

“Her mother.”
