Chapter 7 - THE SISTER WHO CAME BACK FOR THE MATTRESS

Michael reached the nursery in less than thirty seconds.
The room was empty.
The balcony doors stood open.
Rain blew across the hardwood floor.
The poisoned mattress was gone.
Frank ran toward the balcony.
“Vehicle leaving east gate.”
Michael looked down.
A black Mercedes tore through the trees.
Victoria had come back to remove evidence while Michael was inside the house.
She knew where he was.
She knew when Safe Three opened.
Meaning someone was watching.
“Lock the estate.”
Frank froze.
“Michael, if she already cleared the gate—”
“Lock everything.”
Police flooded the property.
The Mercedes was found abandoned four miles away.
No Victoria.
No mattress.
No driver.
But in the trunk they found Olivia’s missing laptop.
Michael stared at it through an evidence bag.
“Why would she leave this?”
The detective answered:
“Maybe she didn’t know it was there.”
Emily shook her head.
“No.”
Everyone turned.
“She wanted it found.”
“How do you know?”
“Because she took the mattress.”
Emily pointed toward the laptop.
“If she came to destroy evidence, why leave better evidence?”
Michael looked at her.
She was right.
Again.
Victoria was controlling what they saw.
The laptop required a password.
Michael tried Noah’s birthday.
Wrong.
Their anniversary.
Wrong.
Olivia’s childhood address.
Wrong.
Emily stared at the keyboard.
“Try Daniel.”
Michael looked up.
“My brother.”
Emily’s dead brother.
Why would Olivia use his name?
He entered:
DANIEL.
Wrong.
Emily whispered:
“The date he died.”
Michael entered it.
Unlocked.
Emily closed her eyes.
She had been right.
Olivia and Daniel had worked together longer than anyone knew.
Folders filled the desktop.
TRUST.
VALE.
EDWARD.
VICTORIA.
And one labeled MICHAEL.
He opened it.
Photographs.
Michael entering hotels.
Restaurants.
Private meetings.
His own wife had been documenting him.
“What the hell?”
Frank leaned closer.
Dates went back almost two years.
Emily whispered:
“She was investigating you too.”
That hurt more than Michael expected.
He opened a document.
Olivia’s notes.
Michael has no idea.
Do not tell him until I know whether Frank reports to Edward.
Frank stepped backward.
Michael slowly looked at him.
“Do you?”
“No.”
“Think carefully.”
“I worked for your father before I worked for you.”
“That isn’t what she wrote.”
Frank’s face tightened.
“Yes.”
Michael’s blood chilled.
“Yes what?”
“For years, I gave Edward weekly reports.”
Silence.
“About me?”
“Yes.”
“How long?”
“Until Olivia died.”
Michael walked toward him.
Frank did not move.
“Why?”
“Because your father believed you were taking risks with the company.”
“So you spied on me.”
“Yes.”
“Olivia knew.”
“Yes.”
“Did Victoria?”
“I don’t know.”
Michael laughed once.
Every person he trusted came with an invisible second employer.
Emily stepped between them.
“Later.”
Michael stared at her.
She pointed at the laptop.
He hated her for being right.
The Victoria folder contained financial records.
Payments to Dr. Vale.
Private security.
Medical consultants.
But the payments did not originate from Victoria.
They originated from Carter Family Office.
Edward controlled it.
Michael felt sick.
Then they found an audio recording.
Olivia and Victoria.
Victoria’s voice:
“You think Dad loves Michael more because he’s the son. He doesn’t. He loves control.”
Olivia:
“Then help me stop him.”
Victoria laughed.
“You still think I’m the problem?”
Michael stopped the recording.
Nobody spoke.
He played it again.
Victoria was warning Olivia about Edward.
Not threatening her.
The next recording was worse.
Victoria:
“Vale altered Michael’s bloodwork last year.”
Olivia:
“Why?”
Victoria:
“To make the board believe he was abusing stimulants.”
Michael’s stomach dropped.
There had been a board rumor.
He had crushed it.
He had never known where it came from.
Olivia:
“And Noah?”
A long silence.
Victoria:
“If Dad learns the baby gets founder shares, he’ll change the trust or remove the problem.”
Olivia:
“He can’t change Grandpa’s trust.”
Victoria:
“I didn’t say he’d change the trust.”
The recording ended.
Emily whispered:
“Victoria may have been trying to protect Noah.”
Frank shook his head.
“Her print is on the hospital bag.”
“Maybe.”
Emily looked at him.
“But we already know someone copied your credentials.”
Michael stared at the laptop.
All night he had been chasing Victoria.
Exactly as someone wanted.
Then a new email arrived.
Sent automatically from Olivia’s account.
Scheduled months earlier.
Subject:
IF NOAH IS EVER HOSPITALIZED.
Michael opened it.
One sentence.
MICHAEL, DO NOT LET YOUR FATHER INTO THE ICU.
His phone rang.
Hospital security.
Michael answered.
The voice on the other end was panicked.
“Mr. Carter, your father is gone.”
Michael’s chest tightened.
“What?”
“Edward left the waiting area twenty minutes ago.”
“Find him.”
“We are.”
Michael looked at Noah’s live security camera.
His son was sleeping beneath white hospital lights.
A nurse stood beside him.
Then another figure entered.
White coat.
Mask.
Michael leaned closer.
The man lowered the mask.
Dr. Simon Vale.
May you like
The physician who was supposedly in Switzerland.
And he was standing beside Noah’s bed.
