Chapter 5 - THE FATHER WHO WANTED SILENCE

Edward Carter arrived at the hospital at 4:20 in the morning.

Michael had not called him.

That was the first problem.

Edward stepped from the elevator wearing a charcoal overcoat over pajamas and a white dress shirt.

Two security men followed.

Frank blocked them.

Edward stared.

“You’ve worked for this family twenty-seven years.”

Frank did not move.

“Tonight I work for Michael.”

Edward’s eyes narrowed.

Michael walked toward his father.

“How did you know where we were?”

Edward ignored the question.

“How is Noah?”

“How did you know?”

“I have people.”

“That isn’t an answer.”

Edward looked through the ICU glass.

For a moment, his face changed.

He looked old.

Terrified.

Human.

Then it disappeared.

“Your sister called me.”

Michael almost smiled.

“Interesting.”

Edward turned.

“Why?”

“I gave Victoria the wrong hospital.”

Silence.

Edward’s face remained still.

Too still.

“You’re playing games while your son is sick?”

“No.”

Michael stepped closer.

“I’m discovering who lies.”

Edward’s jaw hardened.

“Victoria told me security moved you here.”

“Which security?”

“No idea.”

“Try.”

“Michael.”

“TRY.”

Every person in the hallway stopped pretending not to listen.

Edward lowered his voice.

“This is not the place.”

“That phrase has protected this family for forty years.”

Michael pointed toward Noah.

“It stops tonight.”

Edward looked at Emily.

“Who is she?”

“My maid.”

Emily’s expression tightened.

Edward studied her face.

Then something strange happened.

Recognition.

Tiny.

But Michael saw it.

“So you know Emily?”

“No.”

Emily stared back.

Edward turned away first.

Michael’s stomach tightened.

“You do.”

“I said no.”

Emily suddenly whispered:

“You knew Daniel.”

Edward stopped.

Frank looked at her.

Edward’s eyes returned to Emily.

“Daniel who?”

“My brother.”

Silence.

“Daniel Parker.”

Edward’s face did not change this time.

But his right hand tightened around the head of his cane.

Emily saw it too.

“You knew him.”

Edward said:

“I employ thousands of people.”

“He drove for Olivia.”

“So?”

“He died after she asked him to copy family-trust records.”

Edward looked at Michael.

“Get this girl away from your son.”

Emily went pale.

Michael’s voice dropped.

“Why?”

“Because grief makes desperate people invent conspiracies.”

Emily took one step forward.

“My brother called me three days before he died.”

Edward stared.

“He said Olivia found altered medical records.”

For the first time, Edward looked genuinely shaken.

“What medical records?”

Emily blinked.

Michael noticed the wording immediately.

Not “That’s ridiculous.”

Not “There were no records.”

What medical records?

Michael smiled without humor.

“You know there were records.”

Edward turned toward him.

“You’re exhausted.”

“And you’re afraid.”

Frank’s phone rang.

He listened.

Then walked toward Michael.

“We got the toxicology report on the hospital bag.”

Edward looked at him.

“What hospital bag?”

Nobody answered.

Frank continued.

“It contained the same class of compound found in the nursery material.”

Michael watched his father.

Edward’s face changed.

He had not known about the second attempt.

Maybe.

Frank continued.

“And investigators found a partial print.”

“Whose?”

Frank hesitated.

Edward snapped:

“Say it.”

Frank looked directly at him.

“Victoria’s.”

Edward closed his eyes.

Michael stared.

“You knew.”

“No.”

“You knew she was involved.”

“No.”

“Dad.”

Edward’s face crumpled for half a second.

Then he whispered:

“She was supposed to scare Olivia.”

Michael felt the world stop.

Emily covered her mouth.

Frank took one step backward.

“What?”

Michael’s voice barely existed.

“Scare my wife how?”

Edward looked toward the floor.

“Eight months ago, Olivia threatened to challenge the family trust.”

“Why?”

“She believed Victoria had hidden distributions.”

“And?”

“She said she was going to the board.”

“So Victoria killed her?”

Edward looked up sharply.

“No.”

“You just admitted—”

“I told Victoria to stop Olivia from embarrassing the family.”

Michael grabbed his father by the coat.

Frank moved but did not interfere.

“What did you tell her to do?”

“Watch her. Pressure her. Make her understand what disclosure would cost.”

“My wife died on a highway.”

“I KNOW.”

Edward’s voice broke.

Michael released him.

Edward stumbled against the wall.

For the first time, the feared Carter patriarch looked terrified of his own son.

“I covered things after the crash.”

Michael’s hands went numb.

“What things?”

“Calls. Security records.”

“Why?”

“Because I thought Victoria had frightened Olivia and Olivia lost control of the car.”

Michael stared.

“You hid evidence because you thought your daughter might have caused my wife’s death.”

“I was protecting the family.”

Michael laughed.

Quiet.

Almost insane.

“My wife was family.”

Edward looked away.

“My son is family.”

Silence.

“You chose Victoria.”

Edward whispered:

“I was trying not to lose both of you.”

“No.”

Michael’s face hardened.

“You chose the child you always choose.”

That sentence struck something.

Emily saw it.

Frank saw it.

Edward said nothing.

Then Michael’s phone buzzed.

A new message.

Unknown number.

Video attachment.

He opened it.

Olivia appeared on screen.

Alive.

Pregnant.

Recorded nine months earlier.

She looked directly into the camera.

“Michael, if you ever see this, your father already lied to you.”

Edward went white.

Olivia continued:

“And Victoria isn’t the person you should be most afraid of.”

The video stopped.

One line appeared beneath it.

FULL RECORDING: CARTER HOUSE, SAFE 3.

Michael looked at Edward.

His father whispered:

“There is no Safe Three.”

Emily slowly turned toward Frank.

Frank’s face had gone pale.

“Yes.”

May you like

Everyone looked at him.

“There is.”
