Chapter 9 - THE BETRAYAL BURIED FOR TWENTY YEARS

Ethan had waited most of his adult life to hear the truth about Thomas Cole.

Now the answer stood on the other side of a locked gate.

“Who helped Linda?” Ethan shouted.

Richard struggled against the security officers.

“Find the blue ledger!”

One officer forced him toward the building.

Savannah screamed for them to stop.

Ethan grabbed her before she could climb the gate.

“We’ll get him out legally.”

“They’re taking him away!”

“And if we get arrested, Linda wins.”

Savannah knew he was right.

That made it worse.

Four hours later, Daniel obtained an emergency court order requiring the facility to preserve Richard’s medical records and allow an independent examination.

By evening, Richard had been moved to a hospital under court supervision.

A physician confirmed that Richard had been heavily medicated for years despite lacking a clear diagnosis that justified the regimen.

Savannah sat beside him.

“Daddy, why did you leave us?”

Richard wept.

“I didn’t.”

He explained that seventeen years earlier, he had discovered a sophisticated scheme involving fraudulent invoices, stolen intellectual property, and hidden offshore accounts.

Linda had been involved.

But she had not acted alone.

When Richard threatened to expose the operation, someone sabotaged his aircraft.

He survived an emergency landing.

But before he could contact Margaret, men claiming to be federal investigators took him away.

They drugged him.

Changed his identity.

And told Margaret he was dead.

Savannah covered her mouth.

“Who did this?”

Richard looked toward Ethan.

“Your father tried to save me.”

Ethan’s breath caught.

“Thomas knew?”

Richard nodded.

“He discovered the offshore transfers. He was gathering evidence when they killed him.”

Ethan closed his eyes.

For twenty-three years, he had carried a photograph of his father in his wallet.

Now the grief felt brand-new.

“Who ordered it?” he asked.

Richard reached for a piece of paper.

His hands shook as he wrote a name.

Savannah leaned closer.

Then she gasped.

The name was not Linda Whitmore.

It was not Claire.

May you like

It was someone Ethan had trusted for years.

Daniel Brooks.
