Chapter 11 - THE DEAD MAN'S FINAL MESSAGE

Ethan couldn’t make himself press play.
For twenty-three years, he had imagined hearing his father’s voice again.
Now that voice waited behind a single click.
Savannah sat beside him.
“You don’t have to watch it alone.”
Ethan swallowed.
Then he pressed play.
Thomas Cole appeared on the screen.
He looked tired.
His tie was loosened.
There was a small cut above his eyebrow.
“If you’re watching this, something has happened to me.”
Ethan stopped breathing.
Thomas continued.
“I discovered a financial conspiracy involving Reed Horizon Manufacturing, Arthur Brooks, and Linda Whitmore.”
He lifted a blue ledger toward the camera.
“These records prove that company assets were diverted through fraudulent contracts.”
Savannah leaned forward.
“The ledger.”
Thomas looked directly into the lens.
“But the money isn’t the worst part.”
His voice cracked.
“People have been threatened. Richard Reed disappeared after he tried to expose the scheme. And I believe Arthur knows where he is.”
Ethan gripped the edge of the laptop.
Thomas paused.
Then he said something unexpected.
“Margaret Reed is not involved. She’s another victim.”
Savannah began crying quietly.
The recording continued.
“I’ve hidden the original ledger somewhere Arthur will never think to look.”
Thomas held up a small brass key.
“Ethan, if you ever find this recording, remember the place where I taught you to be brave.”
Ethan stared.
The recording ended.
Savannah turned to him.
“What place?”
He was already standing.
“The cabin.”
His father had owned a fishing cabin near Estes Park.
When Ethan was seven, he had been terrified of crossing a narrow wooden bridge over a stream.
Thomas had held his hand and said, “Courage isn’t the absence of fear. It’s deciding something matters more.”
Ethan had never forgotten.
They drove through the night.
At dawn, they reached the cabin.
The property had been vacant for years.
Inside, Ethan found the old wooden bridge photograph hanging above the fireplace.
Behind it was a recessed metal box.
Inside lay a blue ledger.
And beneath the ledger was a sealed envelope addressed to Margaret Reed.
Savannah opened it carefully.
The letter contained a confession written by Thomas.
But the final paragraph changed everything.
Thomas had secretly purchased a controlling block of Reed Horizon shares to protect Margaret from Arthur Brooks.
Those shares had never been transferred back.
They were held in an irrevocable trust.
And the named beneficiary was Ethan Cole.
May you like
Ethan looked at Savannah in disbelief.
Legally, he might already control the company Linda had stolen.
