Chapter 9 - The Wolf Who Never Died

Alessandro Moretti was alive.
Twenty-three years after his family declared him dead, the man known as the Wolf agreed to meet investigators in a secure location outside Boston.
I wasn't sure Gabriel was ready.
He hadn't slept properly in days.
His dark eyes looked exhausted.
And he'd stopped pretending that money could solve the problem in front of him.
For the first time, he seemed less like a feared mafia boss and more like someone whose entire childhood was being rewritten.
When Alessandro entered the room, Gabriel stood.
For several seconds, neither spoke.
The resemblance was unmistakable.
The same gray eyes.
The same strong jaw.
But Alessandro walked with a cane, and a long scar crossed his forehead.
"Gabriel."
His voice was rough.
Gabriel swallowed.
"Uncle Alessandro?"
The older man nodded.
"I'm sorry."
Gabriel stared.
"For twenty-three years?"
Alessandro lowered his eyes.
"I know."
"You let us believe you drowned."
"I did."
"Why?"
Alessandro sat slowly.
"Because your father tried to have me removed from the family."
Silence.
Gabriel's hands tightened.
"My father loved you."
Alessandro smiled sadly.
"He loved control more."
Then he explained.
Twenty-three years earlier, the Moretti family operated legitimate shipping and property businesses alongside criminal enterprises.
Alessandro discovered that his brother, Gabriel's father, had been diverting money from a protected family trust.
Some of the money belonged to widows, employees, and relatives who had no connection to the criminal organization.
Alessandro wanted the wrongdoing exposed.
Gabriel's father refused.
Then the threats began.
"Your father said nobody would believe me," Alessandro explained.
Gabriel looked away.
"He told me you betrayed him."
Alessandro nodded.
"That's what he wanted you to believe."
I watched Gabriel's expression change.
For years, he'd measured loyalty through obedience.
Now he was seeing what happened when powerful men confused the two.
Then Alessandro looked toward me.
"Mara Quinn."
I nodded.
"Yes."
He smiled through tears.
"Your grandfather was one of the bravest men I knew."
My throat tightened.
"He died trying to protect your records."
Alessandro lowered his eyes.
"I know."
Then he explained the brass key.
Samuel Quinn had restored the original merchant ledgers documenting the Moretti trust.
When Alessandro went into hiding, Samuel preserved the evidence.
Eleanor became the designated custodian.
And Isabella was named as Alessandro's lawful heir.
But the trust also contained a separate protection.
A requirement that the original records could be opened only with the custodian's approval.
That authority eventually passed to me.
I stared at Alessandro.
"Why?"
He smiled sadly.
"Because Samuel believed someone outside the Moretti family should have the final say."
Then Gabriel asked the question that had been haunting him.
"Who started the conspiracy?"
Alessandro looked toward the window.
"Your father arranged the first fraud."
Gabriel closed his eyes.
"But after he died, someone else continued it."
"Silvio?"
Alessandro shook his head.
"No."
Then he placed a photograph on the table.
A man stood beside Gabriel's father.
He wore an expensive suit and a gold watch.
I recognized him immediately.
He'd been one of the experts sitting at Gabriel's table the night I corrected the translation.
Dr. Leonard Price.

The historian who'd insisted the letter contained nothing important.
And according to Alessandro, Leonard Price had been controlling the Moretti trust for more than twenty years.
