Chapter 13 - The Truth That Finally Opened the Chest

The iron chest had been sealed for twenty-three years.

Now it stood inside a secure archive room, surrounded by attorneys, investigators, and two people whose lives depended on its contents.

Alessandro Moretti.

And his daughter, Isabella.

I'd met Bella the previous evening.

The reunion had been quiet at first.

She stood beside a window wearing a simple green dress.

Her dark curls were shorter now.

But when she turned, I recognized her smile.

"Mara?"

I began crying.

"Bella."

She crossed the room.

We held each other for a long time.

Then she whispered:

"Little Star."

I laughed through tears.

"Moon Girl."

She smiled.

Those were the names we'd invented as children.

Before adults decided we were safer apart.

Before the letters stopped.

Before our family disappeared into silence.

Now we were together again.

Not because everything had been fixed.

But because we'd finally found one another.

And today, the chest would be opened.

Elizabeth Shaw examined the original custody agreement.

The relevant representatives confirmed the authorization.

Then I placed Grandpa's brass key inside the wolf-shaped lock.

For a moment, nothing happened.

I turned it gently.

A small metallic click echoed through the room.

The lid opened.

Inside were leather-bound ledgers.

An old photograph album.

Several sealed envelopes.

And a document bearing the original Moretti family seal.

Alessandro closed his eyes.

"After all these years."

The records were carefully photographed and preserved.

Then an independent specialist examined the ownership documents.

The original trust had been established to protect legitimate property and investment assets for several branches of the Moretti family.

Alessandro was the designated trustee.

Isabella was a named beneficiary.

And certain assets couldn't be transferred without their authorization.

But the documents had been replaced after Alessandro disappeared.

The forged versions redirected hundreds of millions of dollars into companies controlled by Gabriel's father and later managed by Leonard Price.

I stared at the records.

"All that money."

Alessandro nodded sadly.

"Money that should've been protected for family members and employees who had no role in the criminal businesses."

Gabriel looked toward the table.

His expression hardened.

"My father did this."

Alessandro nodded.

"Yes."

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Gabriel asked something unexpected.

"Did he know you were alive?"

Alessandro lowered his eyes.

"He arranged the attempt on my life."

Gabriel closed his eyes.

I watched the grief settle across his face.

He'd spent years believing his father was a ruthless but loyal family leader.

Now he was discovering a man who'd sacrificed his own brother to protect stolen wealth.

Then Alessandro opened the final envelope.

Inside was a letter addressed to Gabriel.

His father's handwriting.

My son,

If this reaches you, the truth has finally escaped me.

Gabriel's hands trembled.

The letter described how his father feared losing control of the trust.

How Leonard helped conceal the records.

And how Alessandro's refusal to cooperate led to a violent confrontation.

Then came the final paragraph.

I told myself everything I did was necessary to protect our family.

But I know now that I was protecting my power.

Gabriel covered his face.

For the first time, the feared mafia boss of Boston cried openly.

Then I noticed another document beneath the letter.

A list of payments.

One name appeared repeatedly.

SAMUEL QUINN.

My grandfather.

And beside the final payment was a handwritten instruction.

Stop him before the archive is opened.

May you like

My heart went cold.

Because the date was three days before Grandpa died.
