Chapter 8 - THE FORTUNE THAT WAS NEVER HERS

The trust contained thirty-eight million dollars.

Elena stared at the number until it stopped feeling real.

The money came from settlements, recovered deposits, private investments, and assets Miguel had quietly moved beyond Victor’s reach.

But none of it belonged to Elena personally.

Miguel had designed the trust to compensate families harmed by the fraudulent property network.

Names filled twelve pages.

Widows.

Shop owners.

Immigrant families.

Retirees.

People who had lost buildings, homes, and businesses.

“He knew he might die,” Elena whispered.

Dante stood beside her.

“Yes.”

“And instead of hiding money for us…”

“He protected the people who had already lost everything.”

That sounded exactly like Miguel.

Elena began crying again.

This time she did not wipe the tears away.

Marcus sat across from her reading the beneficiary list.

His expression changed.

“My firm represents three of these properties.”

Dante looked at him.

“Current owners?”

Marcus nodded.

“Some assets were rolled into later funds.”

“Then your firm has a problem.”

Marcus looked sick.

“Yes.”

He did not run from it.

That mattered.

He contacted his firm’s compliance officers himself.

By noon, attorneys were everywhere.

The wedding became irrelevant.

News of a potential historic property-fraud case began moving through private financial circles.

Victor Laurent’s companies received preservation orders.

Patricia’s family firm opened an internal investigation.

The Reyes Restoration Trust was placed under temporary court supervision.

Then Dante’s attorney discovered something Miguel had hidden even more carefully.

The trust had a controlling trustee.

Miguel named one person.

Luca Salvatore.

Dante’s father.

Elena looked at him.

“Your family controlled this money?”

“Protected it.”

“For sixteen years?”

Dante nodded.

“Without touching a dollar.”

She was suddenly angry.

“You knew there was a trust?”

“No.”

“Your father never told you?”

“He died seven years ago.”

Dante’s voice changed slightly.

“My father kept secrets even from me.”

The court file included one sealed instruction.

It could only be opened if Miguel’s daughter appeared personally with the brass key.

Elena had done that.

The clerk broke the seal.

Inside was a single page.

Miguel’s final instruction.

If Elena is ever forced to choose between money and peace, give her neither.

Give her the truth and let her choose for herself.

Elena read it twice.

Then reached the final paragraph.

If Dante Salvatore is present when this is opened, tell him I knew he would come looking eventually.

Dante froze.

Miguel continued:

And tell him the man who ordered the attack on his car was not Victor Laurent.

Everyone looked at Dante.

His face became stone.

The last line contained a name.

May you like

LUCA SALVATORE.

Dante’s own father.
