Chapter 11 - THE BRIDE CAME WITHOUT HER WEDDING DRESS

Vivien arrived wearing jeans, sneakers, and Marcus’s oversized coat.

Her wedding gown was gone.

So was the diamond tiara.

She looked twenty-eight instead of untouchable.

She held a flash drive in one shaking hand.

Victor was already surrounded by investigators outside.

When Vivien saw him through the window, she started crying.

Not dramatically.

Not beautifully.

She looked terrified.

Elena felt no satisfaction.

That surprised her.

“I took this from Dad’s office.”

Vivien placed the drive on Rosa’s kitchen table.

“Why?” Elena asked.

Vivien laughed bitterly.

“Because apparently marrying your fiancé wasn’t enough destruction for one weekend.”

Marcus flinched.

Vivien looked at him.

“I found emails.”

“What emails?”

“Dad knew Marcus’s firm would eventually control the old Laurent assets.”

Marcus went still.

“He pushed me toward you.”

The room became quiet.

Vivien had believed she stole Marcus because she wanted him.

Some of that was true.

But Victor encouraged the relationship because marrying into the Aldridge family helped protect old financial arrangements.

Elena saw the realization hit Vivien.

She had spent months believing she had won.

Now she discovered someone had been moving her too.

Vivien wiped her face.

“There are recordings on the drive.”

Dante inserted it into a secure laptop.

Audio files.

Emails.

Scanned contracts.

One recording began with Victor’s voice.

If Elena becomes a problem, use Marcus.

Elena felt cold.

Another voice answered.

Beatrice?

No.

Patricia.

Marcus’s mother.

She said:

She already trusts him. If he marries her, everything stays contained.

Marcus looked as though someone had struck him.

Elena stared at Patricia’s name on the file.

Their relationship had not been arranged.

Marcus genuinely loved Elena once.

But his mother had encouraged it for reasons he never knew.

Then when Elena and Marcus became engaged, Victor grew worried.

Marriage could eventually lead Elena to ask financial questions.

So he used Vivien.

Not by ordering her to seduce Marcus.

By feeding her jealousy.

Telling her Elena secretly mocked her.

Telling her Marcus had doubts.

Creating opportunities.

Vivien still chose betrayal.

Marcus still chose infidelity.

But Victor had cultivated the conditions.

Elena suddenly understood the pattern.

Powerful people did not always force others.

Sometimes they simply learned what weakness already existed.

Then Dante opened the final recording.

Miguel’s voice.

Victor’s voice.

A garage door closing.

The night before Miguel died.

Victor said:

Give me the ledger.

Miguel answered:

No.

Then Victor:

You think Salvatore will protect your family?

Miguel laughed.

I don’t need him to.

Then came a sentence Rosa had never heard.

Elena is already protected.

Victor asked:

By who?

Miguel answered:

By the one person none of you thought to watch.

The recording ended.

Everyone looked around the kitchen.

Rosa slowly sat down.

“Elena…”

“What?”

Her mother’s face had gone pale.

May you like

“I know who he meant.”

And the answer was not Dante.
