Chapter 14 - THE NIGHT THE MORETTI EMPIRE FELL

The courthouse disappeared into darkness.
Jack grabbed my hand.
“Stay close.”
Rocco's voice came through the radio.
“Emergency lights disabled. Multiple armed men inside.”
We entered through a side door while Rocco's team secured the exits.
The building smelled of wet stone and dust.
Somewhere upstairs, a child cried.
Noah.
My heart recognized his voice before my ears understood it.
“Mommy!”
I moved toward the sound.
Jack caught my arm.
“Lily, wait.”
Then a man's voice echoed through the courtroom.
“Come in, son.”
Anthony Moretti.
We stepped through the double doors.
Emergency lamps flickered along the walls.
At the judge's bench stood Anthony, older than the man in the recording but unmistakably alive.
Samuel Price stood beside him.
Marco Voss guarded the aisle.
And near the witness stand, Isabella held Grace against her chest while Noah sat beside my father.
All of them were alive.
I nearly sobbed.
Anthony smiled at Jack.
“My boy.”
Jack's face remained expressionless.
“You're not my father anymore.”
Anthony laughed.
“You've always been dramatic.”
“Let them go.”
“Not until we settle the family business.”
Price placed a folder on the judge's bench.
“Transfer your companies, accounts, and dock authority. Sign, and everyone walks away.”
Jack looked at the documents.
Then at the children.
“You think I'd trade their lives for money?”
Anthony's smile faded.
“I think you'll finally understand what leadership costs.”
I looked toward Isabella.
She met my eyes.
Then glanced down at the silver bird around my neck.
Her expression changed.
She knew.
Slowly, I pressed the pendant's tiny hidden switch.
A soft vibration confirmed the connection.
Earlier, Rocco had linked the pendant's transmitter to a secure emergency recording system.
Everything said in this room was being captured.
Jack stepped forward.
“You murdered people for control.”
Anthony shrugged.
“I removed obstacles.”
“You stole from working families.”
“I built an empire.”
“You threatened children.”
Anthony's face hardened.
“Children grow up. They forget.”
“No,” I said.
Every eye turned toward me.
I stepped into the aisle.
“Children remember.”
Anthony studied me.
“Thomas's youngest.”
“Yes.”
“The girl who should've died in the car.”
The words echoed through the courtroom.
My father closed his eyes.
Jack took one step toward Anthony.
But I raised my hand.
“You ordered that crash?”
Anthony smiled.
“Your husband was supposed to finish the job. Unfortunately, he lacked discipline.”
My stomach twisted.
There it was.
The confession.
The truth I'd spent three years hiding from.
Suddenly, Price noticed the silver bird flashing beneath my collar.
“She's recording!”
He reached for his gun.
Rocco's voice thundered from the doorway.
“Federal agents! Hands where we can see them!”
Armed officers entered from both sides.
Price dropped his weapon.
Marco tried to escape through the rear door but found the exit blocked.
Anthony reached toward Grace.
Jack moved between them.
“Don't.”
For the first time, Anthony looked afraid of his son.
Jack's voice was low and final.
“You don't get another generation.”
Within seconds, Anthony, Price, and Marco were restrained.
I ran toward Noah.
He threw himself into my arms.
“Mommy!”
I held him so tightly he squeaked.
“I knew you'd come,” he whispered.
I kissed his forehead.
“Always, baby. Always.”
Across the courtroom, Jack knelt before Grace.
The little girl studied him.
“Are you my daddy?”
Jack's eyes filled with tears.
“Yes, sweetheart.”
She touched his face.
“Mommy said you were looking for us.”
He gathered her into his arms.
Then Isabella approached me.
My older sister.
Alive.
She reached for my hand.
“Lily?”
I couldn't speak.
She embraced me.
And for the first time since childhood, I remembered the way she used to hold me.
But our reunion was interrupted when my father collapsed.
I caught him before he struck the floor.
“Dad!”
He gripped my wrist.
“Lily,” he whispered. “There's one last thing you need to know.”
His eyes filled with tears.
“Ethan didn't leave you because of your scars.”
I stared at him.
“Then why?”
May you like
My father struggled to speak.
“Because he discovered who you really were.”
