Chapter 11 - THE SECRET INSIDE THE SILVER BIRD

The room went silent.

I stared at Jack.

Then at the phone.

“What did he just say?”

Price laughed.

“Ask your father, Lily.”

The call disconnected.

I stood frozen.

Noah wasn't Ethan's son?

That was impossible.

Or was it?

Five years earlier, my marriage had already been falling apart.

Ethan disappeared for weeks at a time.

I'd been hospitalized after a collapse caused by exhaustion and a respiratory infection.

For several days, my memories were fragmented.

But I'd never questioned Noah's birth.

He was mine.

That was the only truth that mattered.

Jack looked at me.

“Whatever Price is suggesting, we verify it. We don't let him use your child to control you.”

I nodded.

Then Rocco entered carrying a small evidence bag.

“We recovered something from Lily's apartment building.”

Inside was a duplicate silver bird pendant.

I stared.

“That's not mine.”

“No,” Rocco said. “Your father apparently made two.”

He opened the tiny clasp.

A memory chip slid onto the table.

Jack connected it to an isolated computer.

The screen displayed dozens of encrypted financial documents.

Bank transfers.

Shipping records.

Police payments.

Secret offshore accounts.

And one folder labeled:

PROJECT PHOENIX.

Jack opened it.

Inside were medical records belonging to Isabella and me.

DNA profiles.

Birth certificates.

Hospital admissions.

I leaned closer.

My name appeared beside a second name.

Isabella Bennett.

Biological relationship: Full siblings.

I felt tears burning my eyes.

“She really is my sister.”

Jack gently touched my shoulder.

The next document contained Noah's birth records.

I held my breath.

Then frowned.

There was an amended paternal entry.

Ethan Bennett had signed the original certificate.

But a sealed laboratory report recorded a different conclusion.

Ethan was not Noah's biological father.

My hands began shaking.

“How?”

I stared at the date of the test.

It had been conducted when Noah was only six months old.

“Ethan knew,” I whispered.

Jack said nothing.

“He knew for years.”

Then I noticed a handwritten note attached to the report.

Laboratory sample compromised. Original testing requested.

I looked at Jack.

“It's not even confirmed.”

“No,” he said. “It isn't.”

Rocco opened another document.

A recording appeared.

It showed Thomas Bennett speaking into a hidden camera.

“If you're watching this, Price has found us.”

My father's voice cracked.

“Lily, I need you to understand. I never stopped loving you. Everything I did was supposed to keep you and Isabella alive.”

I pressed a hand against my mouth.

He looked directly into the camera.

“Don't trust the medical records. Pierce has been changing identities, test results, and death certificates for years.”

Then he leaned closer.

“And whatever happens, protect Noah. He's the only living witness to what Price did at the warehouse.”

The recording ended.

I turned to Jack.

“Noah was a baby. How could he witness anything?”

Jack looked toward the repaired robot lying on the table.

Then his face changed.

“He didn't have to remember it.”

He picked up the toy and opened the silver compartment.

Hidden inside was a tiny camera module.

And on its memory card was a video file dated the night of the warehouse explosion.

The first frame showed Samuel Price standing beside a bound woman.

Isabella.

Then another man stepped into view.

May you like

Jack's father.

Alive.
