Chapter 4 - THE SECRET BEHIND HER SILENCE

Elena had not spent eight years doing nothing.

She had spent eight years quietly keeping Dante Moretti's world from collapsing.

The realization came to Dante in pieces.

His mother mentioned that Elena had personally arranged her medical appointments.

The household manager admitted Elena paid several employees' emergency expenses from her own savings.

And his chief financial officer revealed something Dante had never known.

“Mrs. Moretti identified the missing shipping payments six months ago.”

Dante stared at him.

“Why wasn't I told?”

“She requested a meeting.”

“When?”

“March nineteenth.”

Dante remembered that day.

Bianca had invited him to lunch.

He had canceled dinner with Elena.

The CFO continued.

“She scheduled another meeting in April. Then May.”

Dante closed his eyes.

He remembered telling Elena she worried too much about things she didn't understand.

God help him.

He'd said it in front of Bianca.

“Did Elena find proof?” he asked.

“She believed someone was using charitable donations to conceal illegal transfers.”

“Who?”

“She wouldn't say until she verified everything.”

Dante turned toward the window.

Far below, Chicago traffic moved along the river.

For years, he had believed himself the protector of his family.

Now he was discovering that the person protecting him had been the woman he barely noticed.

Across town, Elena met Rachel in a private conference room.

The attorney studied the documents.

“This is serious.”

“Can we prove the signatures are forged?”

“Yes. But there's something else.”

Rachel turned her laptop around.

A corporate registry appeared.

“Do you know who owns Whitmore Holdings?”

Elena frowned.

“My grandfather's company.”

“And what happened after he died?”

“My uncle sold most of the assets.”

Rachel shook her head.

“No. That's what your family attorney told you.”

Elena stared at the screen.

“Grandfather left the controlling shares in a protected trust.”

“To whom?”

Rachel looked at her.

“You.”

Elena laughed nervously.

“That can't be right.”

“It is. The trust became fully transferable to you on your thirty-fifth birthday.”

Elena had turned thirty-five three weeks earlier.

Dante had forgotten to arrange dinner.

Bianca had persuaded him to attend a business reception instead.

Rachel continued.

“Whitmore Holdings owns significant interests in several logistics companies.”

Elena slowly leaned forward.

“Which companies?”

Rachel highlighted the first entry.

Moretti Shipping.

Then another.

Moretti Commercial Properties.

And a third.

Russo Maritime Group.

Elena covered her mouth.

She wasn't merely connected to Dante's empire.

Through an old family trust, she controlled a substantial portion of its legitimate financial foundation.

Rachel lowered her voice.

“There's one more problem.”

“What?”

“Someone attempted to transfer your shares yesterday.”

Elena's blood turned cold.

“To whom?”

Rachel opened the filing.

A proposed authorization bearing Elena's forged signature.

The intended beneficiary was Bianca Russo.

And beside the transfer date was a note.

EFFECTIVE UPON THE TERMINATION OF THE MORETTI MARRIAGE.
