Chapter 15 - THE GIRL IN THE RED DRESS

Six months after the night Penelope Russo posted her mirror selfie, her life looked nothing like it had before.

The bakery was thriving.

Her father no longer feared eviction.

Vanessa had moved into an apartment nearby, and the sisters were slowly discovering the joy of knowing each other.

Sometimes they argued.

Sometimes they laughed until their stomachs hurt.

And sometimes Penelope simply stared at Vanessa across the dinner table, amazed that the person she'd been missing her entire life was finally sitting beside her.

Isabella had returned to the family.

Sophia Vitiello was recovering in a beautiful house overlooking Lake Michigan.

Anthony Russo was awaiting trial on multiple serious charges.

The stolen assets were being recovered through legal proceedings.

And Dominic?

He had changed.

Not overnight.

Not perfectly.

But honestly.

He no longer treated every problem like a battle he had to win.

He listened.

He apologized.

And when Penelope disagreed with him, he no longer confused her independence with rejection.

That evening, Penelope stood before the same full-length mirror in her apartment.

She wore the same crimson dress.

The silk followed her curves exactly as it had six months earlier.

But something had changed.

She no longer looked at her body searching for flaws.

She looked at herself and smiled.

Her phone vibrated.

A message from Bianca appeared.

If you're late to your own engagement party, I'm coming upstairs.

Penelope laughed.

Her engagement party.

The words still felt unbelievable.

She remembered Dominic standing behind her at the family dinner.

Remembered his nervous expression.

Remembered how he'd opened the second velvet box.

Inside had been a beautiful diamond ring, redesigned using a stone from his mother's family collection.

He had looked at Penelope and said, "I've spent years giving orders because I didn't know how to ask for the things that mattered."

She had smiled.

"And now?"

He had taken her hands.

"Now I'm asking. Will you marry me?"

She had laughed through her tears.

"Only if you promise never to comment 'Delete it' under my photographs again."

Dominic had smiled.

"I promise."

Then she'd kissed him.

And said yes.

Now, standing in front of her mirror, Penelope lifted her phone.

She took another photograph.

Same dress.

Same apartment.

Same woman.

But this time, she wasn't afraid of being seen.

She posted it with a caption.

Still seeing red. Still not deleting it.

Within seconds, comments appeared.

Bianca wrote:

MY GIRL!

Vanessa added:

Save that dress. I'm borrowing it.

Then a familiar account appeared.

@DV88.

Penelope held her breath.

The comment contained three words.

Absolutely beautiful, sweetheart.

She laughed.

A moment later, someone knocked.

Three gentle knocks.

Penelope walked toward the door.

When she opened it, Dominic stood outside in a dark suit.

He held a bouquet of red roses.

No bodyguards in the hallway.

No urgent phone calls.

No danger waiting near the elevator.

Just a man looking at the woman he loved.

"You're early," she said.

"I couldn't wait."

She accepted the flowers.

"You're getting sentimental, Mr. Vitiello."

He smiled.

"You started it."

Penelope stepped into his arms.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then Dominic looked down at her dress.

"The same one?"

She nodded.

"The same one."

He brushed a curl from her cheek.

"You know, I owe you an apology for that first comment."

She raised an eyebrow.

"Only one?"

He laughed.

"Several. But let's start there."

Penelope folded her arms playfully.

"I'm listening."

Dominic grew serious.

"When I saw that photograph, I was jealous because I knew other men would notice how beautiful you were. And I was frightened because someone dangerous was watching you."

She nodded.

"So instead of telling me the truth, you ordered me to erase the picture."

"Yes."

"And that was wrong."

"Completely wrong."

Penelope smiled.

"Good answer."

Dominic took her hand.

"You're allowed to be seen, Penelope. You're allowed to be beautiful. You're allowed to live your life without asking anyone's permission."

Her eyes filled with tears.

"And you're allowed to love someone without trying to control them."

He nodded.

"I'm learning."

She kissed him.

Then she stepped back.

"Come on. Bianca will murder us if we're late."

Dominic offered his arm.

Together, they walked toward the elevator.

Downstairs, their families were waiting.

Frank and Isabella stood beside the birthday cake Bianca had insisted on bringing, even though nobody was celebrating a birthday.

Vanessa was laughing with Lorenzo.

Sophia sat near the windows, smiling at her son.

For the first time in years, the room contained no secrets.

No missing daughters.

No hidden mothers.

No stolen identities.

Just a family that had finally found its way back together.

Later that evening, Dominic stood beside Penelope on the balcony.

Chicago glittered beneath the summer sky.

"Are you happy?" he asked.

She looked at him.

"Very."

He kissed her forehead.

"Good."

Penelope rested her head against his shoulder.

"You know something funny?"

"What?"

"Six months ago, I almost returned this dress."

Dominic looked down at her.

"Why?"

"Because I thought I wasn't beautiful enough to wear it."

He turned toward her.

"Penelope—"

She touched his lips gently.

"I know. I don't think that anymore."

Dominic smiled.

"Good."

She looked out at the city.

For years, she'd believed happiness belonged to other women.

Women with smaller waists.

Perfect families.

Easier lives.

But she had been wrong.

Happiness wasn't a reward for becoming someone else.

It was something she deserved as herself.

Dominic reached into his pocket and removed his phone.

"One more picture?"

Penelope laughed.

"Are you serious?"

"Absolutely."

She stepped beside him.

He wrapped an arm around her waist.

She lifted her chin.

And together, they smiled for the camera.

Dominic posted the photograph.

The caption was simple.

The woman who taught me that love is not control.

Penelope leaned closer.

"Not bad, Mr. Vitiello."

He kissed her cheek.

"Anything for you, future Mrs. Vitiello."

She smiled.

And this time, when the notifications began arriving, neither of them cared who was watching.

May you like

Because their love no longer needed to hide.

THE END.
