Chapter 14 - THE LAST SECRET OF SOPHIA VITIELLO

"Sophia Vitiello is alive?"

Dominic stared at Gabriel's report.

Penelope stood beside his hospital bed.

"Your mother?"

Gabriel nodded.

"The account has been active for fifteen years."

Dominic shook his head.

"I saw her coffin."

Penelope understood that terrible sentence.

She had said the same words about her own mother.

Gabriel opened the financial records.

"Someone has been transferring money to a protected medical facility in Switzerland."

Dominic's expression hardened.

"Find out who."

Two days later, investigators confirmed the truth.

Sophia Vitiello had survived the assassination attempt.

She had suffered severe injuries and remained under medical care for years.

Isabella had helped arrange her escape.

When Sophia eventually recovered enough to communicate, she stayed hidden because Anthony still controlled people capable of harming her family.

Dominic was devastated.

"She let me believe she was dead."

Isabella approached him carefully.

"She wanted to come home."

"Then why didn't she?"

"Because Anthony threatened you."

Dominic looked away.

For fifteen years, he had built an empire around grief and anger.

Now he discovered that the woman he mourned had been alive all along.

Penelope took his hand.

"You told me something once."

He looked at her.

"What?"

"That sometimes protecting someone means letting them make their own choices."

Dominic nodded slowly.

"You're right."

He asked Gabriel to arrange a secure call.

That evening, Sophia appeared on the screen.

Her hair had turned silver.

Her face carried scars.

But her eyes were unmistakable.

"Dominic?"

He couldn't speak.

Tears filled his eyes.

"Mom?"

Sophia covered her mouth.

"My boy."

For a long moment, neither said anything.

Then Dominic whispered, "I thought I'd lost you."

Sophia began crying.

"I know."

He lowered his head.

"I became someone you wouldn't recognize."

She smiled gently.

"I've followed what I could of your life. I know you've made mistakes."

Dominic looked ashamed.

"But I also know you can choose what kind of man you become next."

Penelope stood beside him.

Sophia noticed her.

"And you must be Penelope."

Penelope smiled nervously.

"Yes, ma'am."

Sophia laughed softly.

"Your mother once told me you were the bravest little girl she'd ever met."

Penelope's eyes filled with tears.

Dominic squeezed her hand.

After the call, he made a decision.

He would begin the difficult process of leaving his family's criminal operations behind.

His legitimate businesses would undergo independent audits.

Any assets connected to unlawful activity would be addressed through the investigation.

The recovered Russo properties would be returned through the appropriate legal proceedings.

And the medical trust would be overseen by independent professionals.

Penelope watched him sign the first documents.

"Are you sure?"

Dominic looked at her.

"I've spent my life believing fear was the same thing as respect."

"And now?"

He smiled.

"Now I'd rather be someone you can trust."

Three months later, Sophia returned to Chicago.

Dominic met her at the airport.

For the first time in fifteen years, he embraced his mother.

And Penelope stood beside him, holding his hand.

But one final surprise was waiting.

At a family dinner celebrating Sophia's return, Isabella handed Penelope a small velvet box.

Inside was an old diamond ring.

Penelope looked confused.

"Mom?"

Isabella smiled.

"This belonged to your grandmother."

Then she leaned closer and whispered.

"Dominic asked me for permission to give it to you."

Penelope turned.

May you like

Dominic was standing behind her.

And he was holding a second box.
