Chapter 3 - THE WEDDING RING

The most dangerous object Janevra owned weighed less than a quarter ounce.
Her wedding ring.
Elio wanted it destroyed immediately.
Janevra refused.
"No. We use it."
Bruno glanced between them.
Elio's voice dropped.
"Absolutely not."
For the first time since their wedding, Janevra didn't care that twenty armed men feared the man lying in front of her.
"You don't get to decide everything."
"I'm trying to keep you alive."
"And I'm trying to discover who has been watching me sleep."
That silenced him.
They sent the transmitter away from the hospital inside one of Elio's security vehicles while Janevra remained hidden.
Three hours later, the vehicle was followed.
Not by Santoro men.
By someone connected to Moretti Holdings.
Janevra called her father.
Victoriao answered on the second ring.
"Jenny?"
"Did you put a tracker inside my wedding ring?"
Silence.
Just long enough.
"You sound tired," her father finally said.
Her blood went cold.
"Answer me."
"I don't know what you're talking about."
"Then come to the hospital."
"I can't."
"Why?"
Another pause.
Then Victoriao whispered something she had never heard from him before.
"I'm sorry."
The call disconnected.
Janevra stared at her phone.
Elio was already ordering Bruno to locate him.
They found Victoriao forty minutes later.
Not at home.
Not at his club.
At the private airfield.
His jet was fueled.
His luggage was loaded.
And he was preparing to leave Chicago.
Janevra arrived with Elio's security before the plane could move.
Her father stepped onto the tarmac looking twenty years older.
"What did you do?" she demanded.
Victoriao looked past her toward Elio.
Then back at his daughter.
"I put the transmitter in the ring."
Janevra felt the admission like a slap.
"Why?"
"Because I needed to know where you were."
"For what?"
Victoriao's face broke.
Not with anger.
With fear.
"Because your mother wasn't killed in an accident."
Janevra couldn't move.
Her father looked toward the dark runway.
"She found something she was never supposed to find."
May you like
Then he whispered:
"And she hid it for you."
