Chapter 11 - THE FATHER IN THE WAREHOUSE

Janevra went to the warehouse believing her father was a hostage.

She was wrong.

Victoriao was negotiating.

Hidden behind a steel partition with Elio, Janevra heard every word.

"I gave you the girl," Victoriao said.

Janevra stopped breathing.

Daario laughed.

"You gave Elio a wife. That's not the same thing."

"I kept her ignorant of the trust."

"And now she knows."

Victoriao sounded desperate.

"I did everything you asked."

Janevra felt Elio's hand close around hers.

Not to stop her.

To hold her together.

Then Victoriao said something worse.

"I even kept Lucia's investigation quiet after she died."

Janevra stepped from hiding.

"How generous of you."

Her father's face went white.

"Jenny."

"Don't."

Daario reached toward his coat.

Elio's men moved from both sides of the warehouse.

Within seconds, Daario realized the building was surrounded.

But he smiled.

"You still don't understand."

He triggered the warehouse sprinklers and emergency alarms.

Chaos erupted.

In the confusion, Bruno reached Matteo.

Janevra confronted her father.

Victoriao swore he had never ordered Lucia's death.

He had discovered the conspiracy too late.

After Lucia died, he covered up what she knew because Daario threatened Janevra.

"The tracker wasn't for him," Victoriao said.

"It was for me. I needed to know where you were because I knew he would eventually come for you."

Janevra's eyes filled with tears.

"You could have told me."

"I was ashamed."

Daario escaped through a loading door before security closed the perimeter.

But the original ledger remained behind.

Inside were names, payments, dates, and signatures.

Enough to destroy the Santoro alliance.

Enough to expose Daario.

Janevra turned the final page.

One name appeared repeatedly beside Lucia's.

Not as an enemy.

As an informant.

May you like

Elio Vieira.

He had been helping her mother before she died.
