Chapter 12 - THE LITTLE SISTER WHO CONNECTED TWO FAMILIES

Grace was Matteo Moretti's daughter.
My younger sister.
And Luca's niece.
The truth left me speechless.
I stared at my mother.
"How?"
Margaret Bennett closed her eyes.
Then spoke slowly.
Years earlier, her marriage to Richard had collapsed behind closed doors.
They lived separately for months, though the public still believed they were together.
During that time, Margaret worked with Matteo Moretti to investigate illegal financial transfers.
They became close.
Then fell in love.
It wasn't simple.
It wasn't planned.
But it was real.
When Margaret discovered she was pregnant, she intended to leave Richard permanently.
Then the threats began.
Richard found out.
Andrew learned about the investigation.
And Matteo was killed before he could see his daughter born.
I sat beside my mother's bed, trying to absorb everything.
Grace wasn't merely connected to the Moretti family through my marriage.
She was part of it by blood.
Luca stood near the window.
His eyes were filled with tears.
"Matteo never knew he had a daughter."
My mother nodded sadly.
"He knew I was pregnant. But he died before Grace was born."
Luca looked away.
For a long moment, he said nothing.
Then whispered, "He would've loved her."
I watched him.
The man I'd locked out of our bedroom on our wedding night.
The man everyone feared.
The man who'd given me the choice to lock the door.
Now stood trembling because he'd discovered his dead brother had left behind a child.
My heart softened.
Not because he was powerful.
Because he was vulnerable.
Human.
Capable of love without possession.
I reached for his hand.
He looked at me.
"Ellie?"
"Grace is your family."
He swallowed.
"Yes."
"And she's mine."
He nodded.
"Yes."
I smiled through tears.
"Then we protect her together."
His expression changed.
Not triumph.
Not ownership.
Gratitude.
"Together."
The next several weeks were difficult.
The legal process surrounding Grace's guardianship required independent review.
My father's documents were challenged.
Bianca provided testimony.
My mother's medical history was examined.
And Luca cooperated with investigators reviewing the old financial crimes.
Richard Bennett was located in Switzerland and detained after authorities established grounds to question him about the alleged offenses.
Andrew Keller was arrested in connection with financial fraud and witness intimidation.
The evidence concerning Matteo's death was reopened.
For the first time, the people who'd controlled our lives were being forced to answer questions they couldn't silence with money.
Then came the day Grace was allowed to visit our mother.
I stood beside the hospital room door.
Grace held a little stuffed horse against her chest.
She looked terrified.
"What if she doesn't remember me?"
I knelt.
"Then we'll remind her gently."
Grace swallowed.
"Will she still love me?"
My eyes filled.
"Yes."
The door opened.
Margaret looked up.
For a moment, she stared.
Then whispered, "Gracie?"
The little girl dropped the stuffed horse.
"Mommy?"
She ran.
Margaret opened her arms.
They embraced.
And for the first time in eleven years, my mother held both her daughters.
Luca stood beside me.
Tears rolled down his cheeks.
Then Grace turned toward him.
"Are you really my uncle?"
He crouched.
"Yes."
She studied him.
Then asked, "Did you know my daddy?"
Luca's face crumpled.
"Yes."
"Was he nice?"
He smiled through tears.
"He was the best man I ever knew."
Grace stepped forward.
May you like
Then hugged him.
And Luca Moretti, the most feared man in Chicago, held his niece as though she were made of glass.
