Chapter 11 - THE MOTHER WHO HAD BEEN WAITING ELEVEN YEARS

I found my mother in a quiet rehabilitation center outside Geneva.

The journey took two days to coordinate with the investigators and the facility.

Luca came with me.

Not because he insisted.

Because I asked.

We stood outside her room while a nurse explained that Margaret Bennett had suffered neurological injuries years earlier.

Her memory was inconsistent.

Some days she recognized people.

Other days she struggled.

But she was alive.

That was enough to make my knees weak.

The nurse opened the door.

My mother sat beside a window overlooking snow-covered mountains.

Her hair had turned silver.

Her face was thinner.

But when she looked up, I recognized her immediately.

"Mom?"

She stared at me.

For a moment, nothing happened.

Then her eyes filled.

"Ellie?"

I began crying.

I crossed the room.

She reached for me.

"My little girl."

I fell into her arms.

Eleven years.

Eleven years of birthdays.

Christmases.

Heartbreak.

Graduations.

A wedding.

Eleven years believing she was dead.

Now she was holding me.

Warm.

Real.

Alive.

I buried my face against her shoulder.

"I missed you."

Her voice broke.

"I know."

She touched my hair.

"I tried to come home."

I pulled back.

"Why couldn't you?"

Her expression changed.

Fear moved across her face.

"Richard."

My stomach tightened.

"Did Dad keep you here?"

She nodded slowly.

Tears rolled down her cheeks.

"He said if I left, you and Grace would be hurt."

I closed my eyes.

My father had controlled every part of my life.

And apparently he'd controlled hers too.

I took her hands.

"Mom, Grace is safe."

Her eyes widened.

"Grace?"

"She's eleven now."

My mother's lips trembled.

"Where is she?"

"At school. We're working on bringing her somewhere safe."

She began crying harder.

I hugged her again.

Luca stood near the doorway.

He didn't interrupt.

Didn't rush.

He simply waited.

Later, my mother looked toward him.

"Who's that?"

I swallowed.

"My husband."

She studied him.

Then smiled faintly.

"Luca Moretti."

He nodded respectfully.

"Mrs. Bennett."

Her expression changed.

"You look like Matteo."

Luca went still.

"You knew my brother?"

She nodded.

"He saved my life."

The room fell silent.

I looked between them.

"What?"

My mother took a shaky breath.

"Matteo helped me escape after Richard discovered the evidence."

Luca stepped closer.

"What happened to him?"

My mother's eyes filled.

"He was supposed to meet me at the border."

She swallowed.

"But Andrew found him first."

Luca closed his eyes.

For the first time, the final pieces began fitting together.

Then my mother looked toward me.

"Ellie, there's something I need to tell you."

My heart tightened.

"What?"

She squeezed my hand.

"Grace isn't Richard's daughter."

I stared.

"What?"

May you like

My mother began crying.

"She's Matteo Moretti's."
