Chapter 4 - THE BURNED CONTAINER

The building lockdown found Kevin.
Not where anyone expected.
He was in the employee medical room on the thirty-first floor.
Unconscious.
Nico called Gabriel.
Paige was already moving before anyone could stop her.
“Paige.”
Gabriel’s voice followed.
She turned.
“He is the reason men call me at midnight.”
“And someone may have hurt him.”
“That does not make me safer standing here.”
Fair.
They took the elevator.
Kevin lay on a medical cot when they arrived.
Breathing.
Pulse present.
A staff nurse had found him collapsed behind a storage cabinet.
No visible gunshot.
No blood.
Just pale skin and shallow breathing.
Paige stopped three feet away.
Six months of imagining this face.
Sometimes dead.
Sometimes laughing on a beach with someone else.
Never like this.
The nurse said:
“Ambulance is coming.”
Good.
Gabriel kept his distance.
Paige noticed that.
No interrogation.
No threats.
Not while Kevin needed medical care.
Progress from a man she had known for roughly three hours.
Kevin’s eyes opened briefly.
He saw Paige.
Terror.
“Pen.”
Her old nickname.
She hated how much it hurt.
“Don’t talk.”
“Vale…”
His eyes shifted.
“Vale knows…”
Then unconscious again.
At the hospital, doctors suspected sedative exposure.
Not a lethal dose.
Enough to impair him.
Police became involved because assault was possible.
Gabriel’s lawyers cooperated.
Paige stayed.
Not because she forgave Kevin.
Because answers were finally in the room.
At 11:20 p.m., Kevin woke properly.
He saw Gabriel first.
Nearly ripped out his IV.
“No.”
Paige stepped forward.
“Kevin.”
His face changed.
“Paige.”
“You left me.”
He closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
“With thirty thousand dollars in fake debt.”
“I know.”
“You used my identity.”
His eyes filled.
“Yes.”
That hurt more than denial.
“You created Northstar.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Kevin swallowed.
“Vale made me.”
Gabriel’s face became cold.
Kevin rushed:
“Not at first.”
Of course.
There was always an at first.
Kevin had met Martin Vale through a sales job.
Vale offered easy money.
Create shell vendors.
Submit inflated freight invoices.
Small amounts.
Kevin participated voluntarily.
Then amounts grew.
He got scared.
Tried to leave.
Vale showed him proof of the fraud.
Threatened prison.
Kevin needed a clean identity for a new shell.
He chose Paige.
She stared at him.
“You chose me.”
His voice broke.
“I thought it would never touch you.”
The worst sentence selfish people always use.
“I thought I could close it before anything happened.”
“You used my Social Security number.”
“I’m sorry.”
“You put a criminal company in my name.”
“I’m sorry.”
“You left.”
He cried.
“I was trying to lead them away.”
“No.”
Paige shook her head.
“Do not turn abandonment into sacrifice.”
Kevin stopped.
Good.
Then he admitted the debt.
Rusk’s thirty-thousand-dollar loan was not Kevin’s personal gambling debt.
It funded a payment Vale ordered.
Kevin forged Paige’s guarantee because Rusk demanded collateral.
He believed he would repay it within a week.
Then Vale seized the money.
Kevin ran.
Paige inherited the calls.
Gabriel looked furious.
Not at Paige.
At the structure.
“Why did you return today?” he asked.
Kevin’s eyes moved toward the door.
“Because Vale is leaving.”
“When?”
“Tonight.”
“Where?”
“I don’t know.”
“Why come here?”
Kevin looked at Paige.
“I stole his backup drive.”
Nico straightened.
“Where?”
“The portfolio.”
Missing.
Security had not found it.
Kevin whispered:
“Vale took it before he drugged me.”
Paige stared.
“What’s on it?”
Kevin’s expression changed.
“Everything.”
Then:
“And a file called HONEY.”
Gabriel looked at Paige.
She went still.
“Honey?”
Kevin nodded weakly.
“Vale started it after he heard what happened in the office today.”
Paige’s stomach dropped.
May you like
The accidental pet name had become a file inside Martin Vale’s escape plan.
And whatever was in it was important enough for him to drug Kevin before fleeing.
