Chapter 10 - KEVIN’S ELEVEN MILLION

Kevin denied it.
Immediately.
“I don’t have eleven million.”
Paige believed only half of that sentence.
“Then why is your name on the account?”
“I don’t know.”
“Wrong answer.”
Gabriel stood behind her in the interview room but said nothing.
This was Paige’s confrontation.
Her history.
Her choice.
Kevin looked at the financial record.
K.M. BENEFICIARY TRUST.
Eleven million.
Cayman structure.
Opened eight months ago.
Two months before he disappeared.
Authorized by Martin Vale.
Kevin stared.
“He was going to frame me too.”
Possible.
Convenient.
Then Natalia’s evidence included an email.
Vale to Kevin:
YOUR EXIT FUND IS READY.
Kevin closed his eyes.
Paige’s stomach dropped.
“So you knew.”
“Yes.”
“How much?”
“I knew there was money.”
“How much?”
“Five million.”
“Not eleven?”
“No.”
“Why?”
Kevin started crying.
Vale offered him an exit.
Take money.
Disappear.
Leave Northstar behind.
Let Paige absorb civil exposure if the shell companies were discovered.
Paige felt the room go cold.
“You agreed to leave me holding it.”
“At first.”
That phrase again.
“At first.”
“When did you change your mind?”
“The week I disappeared.”
Why?
He discovered Vale intended to escalate from financial scapegoat to criminal scapegoat.
Vale planned to attach hazardous-material purchases and illegal cargo to Northstar.
Paige’s name.
Potential federal charges.
Kevin realized Paige could go to prison.
“Then you ran.”
“I tried to get evidence.”
“You still left me.”
“Yes.”
No heroic rewrite.
Good.
He had failed her.
Then Kevin gave investigators access to the Cayman trust.
He never touched it.
The eleven million remained.
Vale had deliberately overfunded the account.
Why?
Tax evasion?
Escape?
Then forensic accountants traced source.
Not stolen Moretti money.
Insurance proceeds from three destroyed shipments.
One was container 417-23-09.
The burned container tied to Paige’s design.
Vale planned to make Kevin look like the beneficiary of the insurance fraud while Paige owned the shell vendor.
A perfect couple conspiracy.
Kevin and Paige.
Two ordinary people beneath the executive floor.
Disposable.
Then Paige asked:
“What happens to the eleven million?”
Federal seizure and restitution processes.
Not hers.
Not Kevin’s.
Good.
She wanted none.
Then Gabriel’s phone rang.
Natalia.
He answered privately.
Returned looking unsettled.
Paige asked:
“What?”
“Natalia found something in Father’s archive.”
Moretti father?
Gabriel’s father had founded the legitimate trucking company before Gabriel expanded it.
“What?”
“Vale’s original employment recommendation.”
Signed by Gabriel’s late father.
Gabriel read.
Martin Vale had been hired because he helped uncover internal theft at another family company.
Hero origin.
Maybe fabricated.
Attached was reference letter.
From:
Dominic Rusk.
The loan shark.
Vale and Rusk had known each other for at least twelve years.
The debt scheme was not improvised.
Rusk had been one of Vale’s financial tools long before Paige.
Then another page.
Rusk had recommended Kevin for contract work two years ago.
Paige looked at Kevin.
“You didn’t randomly meet Vale.”
Kevin frowned.
“I thought I did.”
No.
Rusk approached Kevin first.
Offered easy financing.
Introduced him to Vale.
They selected Kevin.
Why?
Because of Paige.
Kevin went still.
“What?”
Records showed Rusk researched Paige before Kevin’s first loan.
Why would they care about a graphic designer working at a gym?
Then Gabriel found the answer.
Paige had applied to Moretti Logistics three months earlier.
Her employment application was already in HR.
Vale saw her portfolio.
Saw Northstar drafts.
Saw a clean identity.
Then found her boyfriend.
Kevin had not brought Paige into the scheme.
May you like
Vale chose Paige first.
Kevin was the door.
