Chapter 9 - THE LETTER MY MOTHER NEVER GAVE ME

The envelope contained a letter from Elena Vale.

Written three weeks before the fire.

To my mother.

Sarah,

If anything happens to me, do not trust Dominic. Gregory is compromised. There are others I cannot name.

The ledger is only the first layer.

The real evidence is in the Vale Foundation accounts.

I need someone outside the family to keep one copy.

You are that person.

My mother had kept Elena’s secret.

Then the letter continued.

If Adrian survives, do not bring him the records until Dominic is gone.

If you have a daughter one day, keep her away from us.

No child should inherit this.

I stopped reading.

My mother had done exactly that.

She kept me away.

Until Elise put me inside Adrian’s mansion.

Why?

The second page answered part of it.

One day, if Adrian becomes the kind of man his father hoped he would be, someone must return what I hid.

Not to give him power.

To give him a choice.

A choice.

Adrian took the letter from me.

His hands shook.

I had never seen that.

“What did your father hope you’d become?” I asked quietly.

He stared at the page.

“Not this.”

The honesty hurt.

Adrian’s father, Vincent Vale, had apparently wanted out.

He began separating legitimate transportation businesses from Dominic’s criminal network.

Then he died.

Elena continued the plan.

Then she died too.

Adrian had grown up believing they were weak.

Dominic told him survival required becoming harder.

More feared.

More dangerous.

Everything Adrian became had been shaped by the man who may have destroyed his parents.

Then we found the second item inside the envelope.

A bank token.

Old.

Numbered.

The concierge explained Elena rented a private hotel safe-deposit compartment under a coded name.

The hotel no longer offered the service.

But old boxes had been transferred to a partner bank.

The token could still identify it.

The following morning, attorneys arranged access.

Inside the box:

Foundation records.

Audit reports.

Correspondence.

Enough to prove Dominic siphoned millions from charitable accounts and used the money to bribe officials.

But one document shocked Adrian more than all the others.

A beneficiary agreement.

If Elena and Vincent both died, certain legitimate Vale holdings were supposed to pass into trust for Adrian.

Dominic had altered the documents.

He stole controlling interest.

For years, Adrian had believed Dominic gave him the empire.

In reality, Dominic had stolen most of Adrian’s legitimate inheritance first.

Then returned pieces of it to control him.

I watched Adrian read the final page.

His expression emptied.

“What?”

He pointed to one signature.

Witness:

Gregory Mercer.

Grant’s father.

Then another name.

Co-witness:

Elise Mercer.

Grant stared.

“Elise was fourteen.”

Exactly.

Someone had forged her signature.

May you like

And whoever did it had been using dead and living identities for decades.

The same method used on me.
