Chapter 12 - THE WOMAN WHO FINALLY CAME BACK

Elise Mercer walked into Vale House the next morning.

No disguise.

No fake name.

No fear.

She looked older than the security footage but unmistakably Grant’s sister.

Grant stood frozen in the foyer.

“Elise.”

She looked at him.

“You look terrible.”

He almost laughed.

Then his face broke.

He crossed the room.

She stopped him with one hand.

“Not yet.”

The pain in Grant’s eyes made me look away.

Elise turned toward Adrian.

“I’m sorry.”

“For what?”

“For taking so long.”

She explained everything.

After discovering Gregory’s journals, she learned her father helped Dominic kill Elena.

Grant begged her not to expose it because Dominic still controlled powerful people.

Elise interpreted Grant’s fear as complicity.

She disappeared.

Years later, after Dominic died, she started tracing his financial network.

That led to Sarah Bennett.

Then me.

“I put your name into the Vale hiring system,” she told me.

“Why?”

“Because I needed someone Martin wouldn’t suspect.”

“You used me.”

“Yes.”

At least she admitted it.

“I’m sorry.”

I laughed bitterly.

“Everyone is.”

Elise flinched.

She deserved that.

Then she explained NB Consulting.

Martin created it.

She discovered it afterward and used the recovery email to monitor the account.

She never controlled the money.

She left clues because directly contacting Adrian might alert Martin.

“Why the wooden frame?”

“Because Elena told my father the first clue would always be where Adrian remembered her.”

The frame.

The hallway.

Two minutes every night.

Someone had understood Adrian’s grief better than his security system.

Then came the money.

Twenty-three million dollars had indeed been moved.

But it wasn’t Elena’s.

It was compensation money.

Dominic had stolen from union pension funds, small contractors, hospitality workers and families whose businesses he forced into bankruptcy.

Elena recovered part of it.

Sarah helped hide it until the network could be exposed.

“The money was never meant for Nora,” Elise said.

“Then why does Martin think it was?”

“Because Sarah made the trust look like an inheritance.”

Protection.

If Dominic thought Sarah had stolen it personally, he would search for money.

Not victims.

Not records.

Not restitution.

Adrian looked at me.

“So the numbers?”

Elise nodded.

“Bank access sequence.”

The money remained inside a protected restitution trust.

The sequence identified the trust administrator.

Only one person could activate it.

“Who?”

Elise looked at me.

“Nora.”

I stared at her.

“Why?”

“Because Sarah made you successor trustee.”

I almost laughed again.

“I was a child.”

“The authority activated when you turned twenty-eight.”

My age now.

That explained why everything accelerated recently.

Martin knew the trust had become accessible.

He needed me.

Not dead.

Not yet.

Cooperative.

Or compromised.

Then security interrupted.

Martin was gone.

He had escaped custody during a transfer between rooms.

Adrian’s expression became lethal.

“How?”

Nobody knew.

Then Elise looked at the wooden frame.

“No.”

“What?”

She ran toward the service corridor.

We followed.

The frame was gone.

So was the original photograph of Elena and Adrian.

And according to Elise, something had been hidden behind that photograph that none of us knew about.

A second key.

May you like

The one that could move the entire trust.

Martin had it.
