Chapter 6 - THE TAHOE PLAN

Rachel reached Chloe first.
She grabbed her daughter and shouted for Lucas.
Her father was already running toward him.
The black SUV stopped fifty yards from the farmhouse.
Nobody got out.
Engine running.
Windows dark.
Rachel pushed both children inside and locked the door.
“Grandpa, what’s happening?” Lucas asked.
“Probably someone lost,” Rachel said.
Her father looked at her.
He knew she was lying.
Rachel called 911.
Before she finished giving the address, the SUV reversed.
Fast.
It disappeared down the dirt road.
No confrontation.
No threat.
That frightened Rachel more.
They hadn’t come to attack.
They had come to confirm.
Confirm she was there.
Confirm the children were there.
Exactly where Brandon’s family had instructed them to be.
Sheriff’s deputies arrived forty minutes later.
The plate belonged to a rental company.
Vehicle rented in Reno that morning.
Name on the contract:
Thomas Reed.
The bank manager.
Rachel stared at the deputy.
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
Thomas Reed was supposed to be in Sacramento.
Instead, the man who had helped someone impersonate Rachel at a bank had rented a vehicle near Tahoe.
The conspiracy had just crossed from financial fraud into physical surveillance.
Rachel called Aaron Patel.
“You need to secure everything involving Thomas Reed.”
“I already suspended his credentials.”
“He rented a vehicle in Reno.”
Patel went silent.
“I’m escalating this.”
“Do that.”
“Mrs. Mercer, I strongly recommend you contact law enforcement.”
“I’m standing beside two deputies.”
That changed his tone.
Rachel spent the next hour reconstructing the plan.
Tahoe.
Miami.
Children.
Custody.
Asset transfers.
Then she found it.
A draft email in Brandon’s iPad.
Never sent.
Addressed to a family-law attorney.
Subject:
URGENT SAFETY CONCERNS REGARDING MY WIFE.
The text accused Rachel of emotional instability, obsessive financial control, and “isolating the children at her family’s remote agricultural property.”
Rachel read that phrase twice.
Remote agricultural property.
They hadn’t told her to take the children to Tahoe because they wanted privacy in Miami.
They needed her there so Brandon could claim she had taken the children away during a marital breakdown.
Attached was another draft.
A petition for temporary emergency custody.
Already filled out.
Already signed by Brandon.
Rachel’s chest tightened.
He had signed this one.
No forgery.
No excuse.
The date was Saturday.
The day before he kissed her and left.
She called him.
He answered immediately from the Miami police station.
“How’s Paige?”
“Still unconscious.”
“Where’s Brenda?”
“Nobody knows.”
Rachel skipped sympathy.
“Did you sign an emergency custody petition?”
Silence.
“Brandon.”
“Mom said it was precautionary.”
Rachel closed her eyes.
“You signed papers saying I was unstable and dangerous.”
“She said we needed leverage.”
“Against your wife?”
“You control everything!”
“I pay for everything because you refuse to.”
“That’s not the same—”
“You tried to take my children.”
His anger vanished.
“I wasn’t going to file it.”
“You signed it.”
“I wasn’t going to use it unless—”
“Unless what?”
He stopped.
That unfinished sentence was enough.
Rachel lowered her voice.
“You’re done, Brandon.”
“Rachel—”
“Not financially. Not legally. With me.”
The words surprised even her.
Fourteen years reduced to four syllables.
With me.
Brandon began talking quickly.
“Please don’t do this while Paige is in the hospital.”
“You started this while our children were sleeping upstairs.”
Then he said something unexpected.
“Rachel, I think Mom is in trouble.”
“So is Paige.”
“No. I mean Mom didn’t leave willingly.”
Rachel hesitated.
“What makes you think that?”
“The hotel cameras.”
“What about them?”
“Police showed me footage from the elevator.”
“And?”
“Mom left Room 1704 before Paige was attacked.”
“With Richard?”
“Yes.”
“That proves nothing.”
“She wasn’t walking.”
Rachel went still.
“What?”
“Richard had his arm around her.”
“Maybe she was drunk.”
“No.”
Brandon’s voice dropped.
“Her hands were zip-tied.”
Rachel stopped breathing.
Then another call flashed across her screen.
Unknown Nevada number.
She answered.
A woman whispered:
“Rachel?”
Brenda.
Her voice trembled.
“I need you to listen to me.”
Rachel motioned for the deputy.
“Where are you?”
“I don’t know.”
“Is Richard with you?”
A sob.
Then Brenda whispered:
“You have to get the children off that property.”
Rachel looked toward Lucas and Chloe.
“Why?”
“Because Tahoe was never about custody.”
A door slammed on Brenda’s end.
Her breathing became frantic.
May you like
Then she said:
“They’re looking for something your father buried there thirty years ago.”
