Chapter 5 - THE WOMAN IN THE HOTEL ROOM

Rachel was already calling Miami police from another phone when Brandon started shouting.

“Paige!”

A crash.

Then:

“Wake up!”

“Brandon, don’t touch anything.”

“She’s bleeding!”

“Where?”

“I don’t know. Her head. Her face.”

“Is she breathing?”

Rachel heard him move.

“Yes.”

“Put pressure on the wound with a clean towel. Police and paramedics are coming.”

“How do you know?”

“Because unlike you, I plan before I panic.”

It was cruel.

She regretted it immediately.

But there was no time.

Brandon began crying.

Rachel had heard him cry only twice in fourteen years.

When his father died.

When Chloe was born premature.

“Rachel, somebody did this.”

“I know.”

“Where’s Mom?”

That was the question.

Police reached Room 1704 within six minutes.

Rachel stayed on the line until an officer took Brandon’s phone.

Paige was alive.

Unconscious.

Significant head trauma.

The room had been searched.

Laptop missing.

Suitcase opened.

Bathroom mirror shattered.

Brenda nowhere.

Neither was Richard Vale.

At 1:44, Dana called.

“Do not fly to Miami.”

“I wasn’t planning to.”

“Good. Because things just became criminal in a way that has nothing to do with marital assets.”

Rachel looked toward the yard.

Lucas and Chloe were helping their grandfather stack crates.

They had no idea their aunt was in surgery.

No idea their father was speaking to police.

No idea their grandmother had possibly disappeared with a man plotting to raid their future.

Rachel wanted to keep it that way for another hour.

“What did Paige know?”

Dana asked.

“A lot.”

“Enough to be dangerous?”

“Apparently.”

Rachel opened the iPad archive again.

Search: RICHARD.

Twenty-eight matches.

Search: R.

One hundred nine.

She began reading in chronological order.

The first message was eight months old.

R: Rachel is more liquid than expected.

The second:

Brenda: I told you my son married well.

Then:

R: Don’t underestimate her. She found me once.

Brenda: She doesn’t know you’re involved.

R: Keep it that way.

Rachel’s throat tightened.

This had started long before the Miami trip.

She scrolled.

Six months earlier:

R: Brandon needs to feel humiliated, not recruited. Make him believe this is about taking back control of his marriage.

Brenda: Easy.

R: Paige handles documents. You handle Brandon.

Rachel sat back.

Brandon had been manipulated.

That didn’t make him innocent.

He had still spied.

Still lied.

Still tried to take what wasn’t his.

But maybe he had never understood the real scale.

Then Rachel reached a message from three weeks earlier.

Brenda: What happens once accounts transfer?

R: You get what we agreed.

Brenda: And Brandon?

R: He gets his divorce.

Brenda: Paige?

R: She gets Miami.

Brenda: Rachel?

There was no answer for four minutes.

Then Richard wrote:

R: Rachel gets blamed.

Rachel felt cold.

Blamed for what?

She kept scrolling.

A week later:

Paige: I’m not comfortable with Tahoe.

R: It has to happen while the children are there.

Paige: Why?

R: Because custody changes everything.

Rachel’s fingers stopped.

The children.

Miami was never just about removing Brandon from Sacramento.

They wanted Rachel to take Lucas and Chloe to Tahoe.

Exactly as Brandon had ordered.

Why?

Her phone rang.

Her father.

“Rachel?”

“Dad?”

His voice sounded strange.

“Are you expecting someone?”

Rachel stood.

“What?”

“A black SUV just came through the lower gate.”

Her parents’ property had only one private road.

Rachel moved toward the window.

“Lock the doors.”

“Rachel—”

“Now.”

She ran toward the back porch.

Across the cornfield, dust rose behind a black SUV climbing the hill toward the farmhouse.

Lucas and Chloe were still outside.

And suddenly Rachel understood the message.

It has to happen while the children are there.

“LUCAS!”

Both children turned.

May you like

“Inside! Now!”

The SUV accelerated.
