Chapter 8 - MY BROTHER HAD USED ME AS BAIT BEFORE I EVER MET ETHAN
I slapped Daniel.
Once.
Open hand.
Then immediately regretted giving anger physical form.
Not because he did not deserve anger.
Because I wanted control.
He did not defend himself.
“I’m sorry.”
“Don’t.”
I stepped away.
“You built the Beaumont profile.”
“Yes.”
“You knew Ethan’s family hunted wealthy women.”
“Yes.”
“You made me visible.”
“Yes.”
“Did Mom know?”
“No.”
Thank God.
At least one boundary.
Then:
“Did you expect marriage?”
“No.”
“What did you expect?”
A relationship.
Invitation to estate.
Access.
Daniel knew Richard’s old personal archive was hidden behind wine cellar in mansion basement.
He could not enter directly.
He believed if Ethan dated Claire Beaumont, Caldwell security would investigate and perhaps bring her onto estate.
He planned to use my proximity indirectly.
Before he could contact me safely, I independently decided to target Ethan.
Two operations collided.
Then when I told Peter I had met Ethan, Daniel realized.
He tried anonymous warnings.

Richard chose not to target me.
Strange mercy? Maybe strategic.

IF SHE RETURNS, WATCH DANIEL.
He knew brother alive.
So Daniel’s cover perhaps not as hidden.
Richard may have tolerated him intentionally.

Then after fire deaths:
Michael recording:
“You said empty building.”
Richard:
“Plans change.”
Michael:
“Jonathan was inside.”
Richard:
“Then hospital will solve what warehouse didn’t.”
There.
Direct implication Richard intended father silenced after accidental survival.
Michael horrified.
Then:
“I’m going to police.”
Richard:
“You’ll send your son to prison with your signature.”
Because transaction in Ethan trust.
Blackmail.
That trapped Michael.
Then he spent two years trying undo.
Created restitution with Jonathan? But Jonathan died hours later. Could create with Daniel and Jonathan's pre-signed instructions. Better: Jonathan had discussed contingency with Michael before fire? Were they allies? We said Michael participated fire; unlikely. Maybe Jonathan sensed Michael wavering and had contingency docs. After fire, Michael found Jonathan's instructions through Daniel, then built fund. Fine.
Then hospital audio.
Richard entering Jonathan’s room.
No video.
Nurse recording? Maybe room phone inadvertently recorded? Richard kept tape himself.
He liked leverage.
Jonathan weak:
“You killed those men.”
Richard:
“You weren’t supposed to be there.”
Jonathan:
“And now?”
Richard:
“Now you sign.”
What?
Transfer of Vale routes.
Dad refused.
Richard threatened Claire/Daniel.
Dad said:
“They already have what they need.”
Then Richard:
“Who?”
Jonathan:
“Michael.”
That was why Richard later targeted Michael.
Then final part.
Richard told doctor? Not on tape.
But intent.
Then one file surprised:
Post-hospital payment to Margaret.

She said no.

So she returned.

Then after Michael died, fear hardened her into Richard loyalist.
She chose survival.

From Richard two months before death:
CLAIRE VALE MAY COME BACK ONE DAY.
If she does:
Do not kill her.
Do not threaten her.
Marry her.
Everyone froze.
He had anticipated exactly.

Yes.
Richard discovered restitution fund buying Caldwell shares.
He knew Claire was eventual beneficiary.
Marriage was his preferred counter.
He left instructions to Margaret:
If Claire resurfaces under another name and approaches Ethan or Julian, bind her legally to family before she understands trust.
He turned my revenge route into one he had predicted.
I had thought I infiltrated them.
Dead patriarch had designed a contingency for my return.
Then next line:
If she marries Ethan, keep Daniel close. He will stop her before she destroys both families.
My heart stopped.
Richard knew Daniel’s loyalty conflict.
He predicted my brother would prioritize evidence over revenge.
And tonight, Daniel did stop final upload.
Not because Richard controlled him.
But from outside, it looked exactly as planned.
Then Daniel found bottom page.
Handwritten after Richard’s death.

Then final notation:
MARRIAGE WINDOW: 2026.
Why 2026?
Current year.
Something in trust matured now.
Not merely shares.

Peter Shaw checked.
Beaumont Restitution Trust had ten-year trigger:
On tenth anniversary of Jonathan Vale death, voting shares became active.
This year.
So Caldwell needed Claire married before activation.
The wedding date was not romantic timing.
It was financial deadline.
Then another note:
If Claire refuses marriage, use Daniel.
My brother looked sick.

Just:
DANIEL KNOWS WHY THEIR MOTHER REALLY DIED.
I turned.
Our mother died of cancer.
