Chapter 7 - THE FILE THEY BUILT TO CALL ME CRAZY

Luca did exactly what I expected.

He filed for a temporary protective order.

Against me.

His petition claimed I had become unstable after the wedding.

That I threatened his family financially.

That I had access to powerful corporate resources.

That he feared retaliation.

I almost laughed.

Then Rachel said:

“Don’t.”

“What?”

“Treat this seriously.”

So we did.

No public posts.

No messages.

No calling Luca.

Evidence only.

The judge saw both sides.

Video from the wedding.

Medical records.

Threat messages.

Surveillance files from my home.

Luca’s petition was denied.

Then my own request for protective conditions moved forward separately.

No victory speech.

Just distance.

That night, I finally slept for five hours.

Then Marco called.

He found another folder at Moretti Capital.

JESSI — CONTINGENCY.

Inside was a draft psychiatric referral letter.

Never sent.

It described me as:

Emotionally volatile.

Paranoid regarding finances.

Obsessed with control.

Potentially unsafe under marital stress.

Signed:

Dr. Samuel Price.

I knew the name.

Luca’s family psychiatrist.

I had met him once at dinner.

He had never treated me.

Never evaluated me.

Yet a draft letter existed describing my mental state.

Marco looked sick.

“Dad keeps files on everyone.”

“Why?”

“Leverage.”

Then another document appeared.

A draft board communication for Hartwell.

In case I resisted the proxy.

It suggested my temporary withdrawal from voting matters because of “acute personal distress associated with marital instability.”

I stared.

They had planned multiple paths.

If I cooperated, Luca voted.

If I resisted, undermine my credibility.

If I left, call me unstable.

Then Rachel found something even more disturbing.

Dr. Price owned a small investment interest in Apex.

Conflict.

Again.

Not proof of a crime.

Proof everyone in Vincent’s circle stood to gain if Hartwell bought Apex.

I felt nauseated.

Then Marco told me why he finally turned against his father.

Years earlier, his girlfriend Elena had not merely left.

She had discovered inflated consulting payments tied to Apex.

Vincent threatened her professional license by accusing her of data theft.

She backed down.

Marco let her.

“I was a coward.”

I looked at him.

“Yes.”

He nodded.

No defense.

Then he handed me Elena’s contact information.

“She saved everything.”

Three days later, Elena provided emails showing Vincent had been preparing Apex for sale to Hartwell for almost four years.

Long before Luca proposed to me.

Long before our wedding.

Then came the line that made my hands shake.

Vincent to Marco, four years earlier:

If Luca ever gets serious with Hartwell’s granddaughter, do not interfere. That connection could solve several problems.

Our relationship may not have started as a corporate plan.

But Vincent had recognized its value almost immediately.
