Chapter 2 - THE SHARES HE THOUGHT MARRIAGE GAVE HIM

My grandfather left me twelve percent of Hartwell Industrial.

Not a controlling stake.

But enough to matter.

Hartwell manufactured aviation components, medical equipment, and specialized industrial systems.

I rarely discussed it.

Luca knew I owned “some family shares.”

He never asked questions.

Or I thought he didn’t.

Rachel explained the part I had forgotten.

Years earlier, my family trust had contained an old spousal proxy provision.

If I married, I could voluntarily grant a spouse limited voting authority for specific trust-held shares.

Voluntarily.

Not automatically.

I had never signed that proxy.

But Luca’s father, Vincent Moretti, apparently believed I had.

“How?” I asked.

Rachel’s expression hardened.

“Because someone requested a draft proxy from Hartwell’s transfer counsel three months ago.”

“Who?”

She handed me an email.

Requestor:

WENDY MORETTI.

My mother-in-law.

Reason:

Estate planning preparation following Jessi Hart’s marriage.

I stared at her.

Wendy’s face had lost all color.

“You contacted my company’s counsel?”

She lifted her chin.

“We were planning for the future.”

“My future?”

“Our family’s.”

There it was.

I looked at Luca.

“Did you know?”

He hesitated.

That was enough.

“How much?”

“I knew Dad wanted to discuss voting rights after the wedding.”

“Why?”

“Because Hartwell is reviewing the Apex acquisition.”

My pulse changed.

Moretti Capital owned a significant stake in Apex Systems.

If Hartwell acquired Apex, the Morettis stood to make millions.

The board vote was in nine days.

My twelve percent did not decide everything.

But it could matter.

Then Rachel opened another file.

Vincent Moretti had personally borrowed against part of his Apex stake.

If the acquisition failed, his lenders could force liquidation.

He did not merely want the deal.

He needed it.

Luca looked sick.

“Dad told me it was normal.”

“Normal?”

“He said once we were married, our interests would align.”

I laughed.

“Your interests.”

Then one of the officers returned.

The hotel had security footage from three camera angles.

Cake table.

Ballroom center.

Side corridor.

Luca’s “joke” was fully recorded.

So was something else.

Twenty minutes before the cake cutting, Wendy stood near the service corridor speaking to Vincent.

Audio from a nearby camera caught part of it.

Vincent said:

“If Luca doesn’t get her cooperation after tonight, we have a problem.”

Wendy answered:

“After tonight, she’ll understand how this family works.”

I stared at the screen.

The cake incident had not been planned as harmless fun.

It had been part of a lesson.

A public one.

Then another sentence played.

Wendy:

“She needs to learn that once she’s a Moretti, she doesn’t say no to us.”

That was when I understood.

They had not been celebrating a marriage.

They were celebrating an acquisition.
