Chapter 11 - THE HOUSEKEEPER WHO PLANNED CHRISTMAS

Mrs. Garrison disappeared before sunrise.

Her room was empty.

Uniform gone.

Documents burned.

But she left one thing behind.

A photograph.

Alexander Vale at twenty.

Margaret Kane at seventeen.

Holding a baby.

Elias.

On the back:

HE PROMISED HE WOULD COME BACK.

Elena stared at the photograph.

“She's been here the entire time.”

Dominic stood beside her.

“Eleven years.”

“How did you not know?”

“Because she came with excellent references.”

Elena looked at him.

“You run a criminal empire and don't background-check your housekeeper?”

Dominic almost smiled.

“We did.”

“And?”

“Her identity was clean.”

“Apparently too clean.”

Marco entered.

“Margaret has been creating fake identities for decades.”

“Where did she go?” Dominic asked.

“We traced a vehicle toward Denver.”

Elena looked toward the servants' hallway.

Memories changed shape.

Mrs. Garrison assigning her the hardest work.

Watching her around Dominic.

Refusing to intervene when Vanessa demanded she go outside.

“She wanted me on that terrace.”

Dominic's face hardened.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Marco answered.

“Because the bomb needed to be discovered.”

Elena frowned.

“What?”

“It wasn't supposed to explode.”

Dominic understood.

“The timer stopped.”

Marco nodded.

“It was designed to.”

The entire Christmas Eve attack had been theater.

A controlled crisis.

Make Dominic evacuate the mansion.

Open the security office.

Access the safe.

Steal the ledger.

And Elena?

“She needed you close to the cart,” Marco said.

“So the device would be associated with me.”

Elena's blood went cold.

“They wanted Dominic to suspect me.”

Dominic looked at her.

“I didn't.”

“Not even for a second?”

“No.”

She stared.

“Why?”

He could have said instinct.

He could have said evidence.

Instead:

“Because when I found you outside, you were half dead and still trying to tell me you didn't steal an earring.”

Elena looked away.

That affected her more than it should.

Marco continued.

“Margaret has been sending money to the lenders who threatened Frank.”

“So the gambling debt was fake.”

“Mostly.”

Elena blinked.

“Mostly?”

Marco winced.

“Your father did actually gamble.”

She closed her eyes.

“Of course he did.”

“But nowhere near the amount claimed.”

“So she created the debt.”

“Yes.”

“To force me here.”

“Yes.”

Dominic's voice turned cold.

“And then used Vanessa to isolate her.”

Marco nodded.

Margaret had manipulated everyone.

Vanessa's jealousy.

Harold's ambition.

Elias's rage.

Frank's fear.

Dominic's family secrets.

All for one goal.

“What does she want?” Elena asked.

Marco placed another file down.

“Vale Holdings.”

Dominic frowned.

“She can't inherit.”

“No.”

Marco looked at Elena.

“But Elias can.”

Dominic's jaw tightened.

“If I die.”

“Yes.”

Elena stared.

“So Christmas was step one.”

“Exactly.”

Margaret needed Elias recognized as Alexander's biological son.

Then Dominic dead.

Then legal chaos.

She believed Elias could claim part of the legitimate estate.

Dominic laughed bitterly.

“She built a thirty-year revenge plan because my father abandoned her.”

Elena shook her head.

“No.”

He looked at her.

“She built it because she chose revenge every day for thirty years.”

That distinction mattered.

Pain explained behavior.

It did not excuse cruelty.

Dominic looked at Elena.

“You really do that.”

“What?”

“Separate explanation from excuse.”

“Teachers have practice.”

His phone buzzed.

Margaret sent a message.

A photograph.

Lily-white snow.

A cabin.

A woman tied to a chair.

Laura.

Elena's mother.

Her heart stopped.

A second photograph.

Frank in a hospital transport bed.

Margaret had somehow taken both.

Dominic's expression hardened.

Then the message:

BRING ELIAS TO THE ORIGINAL VALE LODGE.

MIDNIGHT.

NO POLICE.

Elena whispered:

“She wants her son.”

Marco shook his head.

“Elias is in federal custody.”

Dominic's gaze sharpened.

Margaret knew they couldn't deliver him.

Which meant that wasn't the real demand.

Another message arrived.

AND BRING ELENA.

Dominic's face changed.

“No.”

Elena looked at him.

“She has my parents.”

“No.”

“You don't get to decide.”

“She's using you.”

“Yes.”

“She tried to kill you.”

“She tried to frame me.”

“Difference without comfort.”

Elena stepped closer.

“She wants me because I remember.”

Dominic frowned.

“No.”

“She wants me because I can connect Harold, Kane, your father, my father, and Project Winter.”

Marco nodded slowly.

“She is the surviving witness.”

Dominic hated it.

Elena continued.

“If we don't go, she kills them.”

He looked at her.

“We?”

“Yes.”

“You are not bait.”

“I already am.”

Silence.

Dominic finally said:

“Then we do it together.”

Elena blinked.

Not “I forbid it.”

Not “stay behind.”

Together.

Progress.

That evening, they prepared.

Federal agents quietly cooperated despite Margaret's demand.

Elias agreed to participate via recorded video.

He looked tired.

Broken.

When Elena asked why, he answered:

“My mother spent my entire life feeding me reasons to hate people I had never met.”

“Do you hate Dominic?”

Elias looked through the screen.

“No.”

Dominic raised an eyebrow.

Elias almost smiled.

“I find him irritating.”

“Mutual.”

Then Elias looked at Elena.

“My mother thinks revenge is love.”

Elena's expression softened.

“Maybe you can show her it isn't.”

Elias looked away.

“I don't know how.”

“Start by surviving.”

The call ended.

Dominic and Elena drove toward the original Vale lodge.

Halfway there, Elena noticed him staring.

“What?”

“I owe you an apology.”

“For what?”

“Your first Christmas in Aspen.”

She laughed softly.

“This is definitely memorable.”

“I mean what happened in my house.”

His face was serious.

“You were my employee. I failed to create a place where you were safe.”

Elena studied him.

Most powerful men apologized for outcomes.

Not systems.

“That matters.”

He nodded.

“And when this is over, you won't work for me anymore.”

Her expression changed.

“I'm fired?”

“No.”

“That's what it sounded like.”

“I mean you shouldn't have to clean my house to pay debts that never existed.”

Elena looked out the window.

“What if I don't know what I want next?”

“Then you get time.”

“Paid?”

He smiled.

“Obviously.”

She smiled too.

Then the lodge appeared through the snow.

Lights glowing.

One vehicle outside.

Dominic reached for the door.

Elena stopped him.

“Dominic.”

He looked at her.

“If we survive this…”

“We will.”

“Let me finish.”

He did.

She swallowed.

“If we survive, I want to know what this is.”

His gaze held hers.

“This?”

“The thing we're pretending isn't happening.”

Dominic's voice lowered.

“I already know.”

“What?”

He looked at her for a long moment.

Then:

“Something I won't touch until you are free to choose it.”

May you like

Elena's heart stopped.

Before she could answer, an explosion tore through the lodge.
